26/11: Headley gets 35-yr jail

Pakistani-American LeT terrorist David Headley was today sentenced to 35 years in jail by a US court for the Mumbai terror attacks, with the judge expressing his unhappiness over the prosecution seeking a lighter term. Headley, 52, had entered into a plea bargain with the US investigators under which he escaped death sentence, but many were left surprised when the US prosecutors did not seek a life sentence for Headley.

SC questions Centre’s power to allocate coal blocks
New Delhi, January 24
The Supreme Court today raised doubts over the Centre’s authority to allocate coal blocks, pointing out that coal was a state resource under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 and as such only the states had the power to execute mining leases.

Justice JS Verma panel, tasked with suggesting ways and means to punish the guilty of rape, has overstepped its mandate and sparked off another controversy over the continuance of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in conflict zones, like Jammu and Kashmir.

One-man panel to probe Walmart ‘lobbying’

The Union Cabinet today approved setting up of a one-man committee to probe allegations that retail giant Walmart indulged in lobbying to gain entry into the Indian market.

Gandhi’s rare letter to go under the hammer in UK

A unique letter written by Mahatma Gandhi, including textual corrections in his hand and signed by him at the end, is being offered for sale by Mullock’s Auctioneers at Ludlow in the UK. The type-written letter, valued between £10,000 and £15,000 (Rs 8 lakh to Rs 13 lakh), was written in 1943, 15 months after Gandhi and other leaders belonging to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) met first in Wardha and then in Mumbai endorsed the Quit India Movement calling for “an orderly British withdrawal” from India.
