Put cases of crime against women on fast track, CJI tells high courts
New Delhi, January 7
— Altamas Kabir, Chief Justice of IndiaChief Justice of India Altamas Kabir has directed all High Courts and trial courts in the country to fast-track cases of crime against women as the “time has come” for expeditious disposal of these cases “on a priority basis”. Describing rape as a “physical barbarism” that affected the “very soul” of the victim, the CJI in a letter to all HC Chief Justices said all efforts to check violence against women would go waste unless such cases were fast-tracked.

Metropolitan Magistrate Namrita Aggarwal also restrained the media from reporting and publishing the proceedings of the case in the court after the Delhi Police filed an application under Section 327 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPc) for in-camera proceedings.

IITs raise annual fee by 80%
New Delhi, January 7
Students entering the IIT system from this academic session will have to pay 80 per cent more annual tuition fee than those currently enrolled in the premier technical institutes. The IIT Council today granted its approval to hiking the annual tuition fee at the 16 institutes from the current Rs 50,000 to Rs 90,000. All undergraduates joining IITs from 2013 will have to pay the enhanced fee. The fee is applicable only prospectively and will not cover the existing batches.

Ladakh fracas: Disciplinary action okayed against 16 Armymen
Chandigarh, January 7
Nearly seven months after officers and jawans of an artillery regiment clashed at Nyoma near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in southeastern Ladakh, a Court of Inquiry (CoI) has blamed as many as 56 personnel, including at least five offices, for the incident. Sources reveal that the CoI has recommended disciplinary action against 16 personnel, including the regiment’s commanding officer, second-in-command and three other officers for failure of command and control, assault, indiscipline and other lapses.

Badal orders probe into varsity re-totalling scam
Chandigarh, January 7
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today ordered an inquiry into the re-totalling scam in the state's only Ayurveda university in Hoshiarpur. The Tribune had carried a report yesterday highlighting the alleged malpractices in the re-totalling of marks after the semester examination in 2011 in Guru Ravi Das Ayurvedic University. There have been allegations of obliterating the identity of students on answersheets so as to manipulate their results.
