Cold wave claims life in Tarn Taran
Tarn Taran, January 2

The cold wave claimed the life of an unidentified begger here today. The begger had been staying put on the Jandiala Road here for past few days.  The city police has lodged a report under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPc) and the body has been sent for postmortem at the local civil hospital.

71 tie knot in mass wedding 
Seventy one couples tied the knot in a mass wedding at Gurdwara Gurpuri Sahib in Sarhali, 25 km from here, today. The congregation was held in the memory of Baba Tara Singh and Baba Charan Singh, founders of the Kar Sewa sect. Baba Sukha Singh, head of the sect, blessed the newly-wed couples. Baba Hakam Singh, deputy chief of the sect, said daily-use items had been given to the couples as gifts on the occasion. The sect has been organising mass marriages of needy people for more than 25 years. 

Poppy husk, opium seized 
Two quintals of poppy husk and one kg poppy husk has been recovered from the possession of Jagjit Singh Jagga, a resident of Algon Kalan village, 40 kms from here. The police said the accused had been arrested by the Valtoha police at a naka point late last evening with opium. They said further interrogation had led to the recovery of two quintals of poppy husk, which was hidden under the ground in his field. A case under Sections 18, 61, 85 and 15, 61, 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered.
