BJP keeps up its tirade against Centre
New Delhi, December 25 While flaying the government for rejecting its suggestion to summon a special session of Parliament to discuss the issue and collectively come up with solutions, the principal party in the Opposition also sought Centre's intervention in Manipur where the situation turned volatile after molestation and attempt to murder a leading actress Momoko on December 18. By raising the twin issues, the BJP is attempting to corner the beleaguered Central Government that is facing a series of protests from the youth in particular. Today while addressing a rally on the occasion of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu and Gadkari underscored ``Sushashan''' (Good Governance) provided by the BJP-led NDA Government during 1999-2004. "Whatever has been happening in the capital is due to the accumulation of anger of people over the law and order situation here. It is not just because of this particular [gang rape] incident," Naidu said. On his part, Gadkari wrote a letter to the Prime Minister drawing his attention to the incident in Chandel and the State Government's handling of the protest resulting in the death of two people including a journalist and injuries to 15 others in police firing. "Even today, the agitation continues with growing number of incidents involving violence indicating the failure of the State Government, in controlling the situation...The delay in bringing the culprits to book may further aggravate the situation and shall lead to an environment of suspicion'' he said demanding the Centre direct the Manipur Government to act and save the situation. During the rally, picking up from where the party leader Sushma Swaraj left yesterday Naidu said charged that the policies and attitude of the Congress-led UPA was resulting in the people losing faith in parliamentary system. He said while the BJP had raised the gang rape issue during recent winter session of Parliament, the Prime Minister took seven days to come out with a statement. The BJP demanded either a special session of Parliament or an all-party meeting to assure the people that the political system was working for them. Comparing the NDA and the UPA regimes, Gadkari said during the Vajpayee government' tenure, the growth rate had touched 8.5 per cent and was going up but has now come down to 5.2 per cent. Even this figure would have been much less but for the BJP-ruled states doing well in terms of GDP growth.
