Delhi HC declines bail to Kanda
Legal Correspondent

New Delhi, November 19
The Delhi High Court today rejected the bail plea of former Haryana Minister Gopal Goyal Kanda, arrested on the charge of driving his former air hostess Geetika Sharma to commit suicide on August 5.s

Justice Pratibha Rani declined bail after Additional Solicitor General Siddharth Luthra contended that the police was conducting further probe in the case and if released on bail Kanda might influence the witnesses and tamper with the evidence.

The judge also questioned Kanda’s senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi as to why the accused had come to the HC directly, bypassing the sessions court following denial of bail by the trial court on September 20.
The judge said she would pass a detailed order at a later date giving reasons for the refusal to grant bail. Rohatgi argued that Kanda was entitled to bail as police had already filed the chargesheet in the case. He also contended that his client had never provoked Geetika to commit suicide. It was in fact a case of infatuation as Kanda only wanted her to be with him.

The trial court had rejected his bail plea citing further investigation being conducted into a medical report according to which Geetika was pregnant in March this year. The 23-year-old victim was found dead at her Ashok Vihar residence in North West Delhi. She had left a suicide note alleging harassment at the hands of Kanda and his aide Aruna Chaddah, a co-accused in the case.
