Mumbai, November 17
Within minutes of Bal Thackeray's death being announced, Mumbai went into lock-down mode with shops shutting down and vehicles going off the roads. However, the city's BEST buses and local trains on the suburban sections of both the Central and Western Railway are plying normally, according to officials.

Offices across Mumbai asked their employees to leave as soon as news of Thackeray's demise came in. Trains and buses departing from South Mumbai northwards were packed by 6 pm and much downtown Mumbai was deserted within an hour, according to local residents.

Across Mumbai, housing societies pulled down Diwali lights as Shiv Sena activists went around asking people not to light crackers or switch on colourful lights as a mark of respect for their leader.

There have been no reports of violence and traffic was not disrupted. Uddhav Thackeray appealed to party workers to stay calm and cooperate with the police.

The Shiv Sena Bhawan, the party headquarters, which was lit up on Friday wore a mournful look as party workers pulled down saffron flags and pulled out Diwali lights as soon as the death of Thackeray came in.

Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh said the department has deployed 20,000 police personnel across the city on “bandobust” duty.

He asked Mumbaiites not to venture out of their homes today and tomorrow unless it was required. Maharashtra's Home Department said contingents of the Rapid Action Force and the State Reserve Police have been deployed in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Nashik and other cities as part of a general alert, in force for several days.

Outside Matoshree, the residence of Thackeray, the police had to contend with grieving Shiv Sainiks who tried to push through the barricades. However, within minutes, the police and RAF personnel quickly cleared the road leading to the building. Mediapersons have also been asked to assemble some distance away as part of a security drill prepared by the police.

Shiv Sena shakhas are putting up boards in Mumbai's street corners providing details of funeral arrangements.

Funeral at 6 pm today

  • The funeral of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray will be held at the crematorium next to Shivaji Park on Sunday evening
  • Party spokesman Sanjay Raut said his remains will be moved to Shiv Sena Bhavan, the party HQ, around 7.30 am
  • From there, the body will be taken to the nearby Shivaji Park where it will be kept for ‘darshan’ 10 am onwards
  • Around 5.30 pm, Thackeray's remains will be moved to the crematorium for the last rites scheduled for 6 pm.

Tributes from across party lines

The nation has lost a veteran leader who worked to help the common man and whose contributions in the field of media added a different perspective to the political discourse.

Pranab Mukherjee, President

The interests of Maharashtra were particularly important for Thackeray and he always strove to inculcate a sense of pride in its people.

Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister

It is rare that I have seen in these 65 years of Independent India a political leader who has left such a deep and abiding imprint on the country’s events as Balasaheb Thackeray.

LK Advani, bjp leader

Maharashtra has lost a veteran, experienced leader. He was a politician, cartoonist, editor, organiser as well as art lover and orator.

Prithviraj Chavan, Maharashtra cm

Thackeray, as a cartoonist, arrived on the scene like a storm after the collapse of communists in Mumbai and took forward the legacy of his reformist father~

Sushilkumar Shinde, Union Home Minister

He considered Chhatrapati Shivaji his idol. We took inspiration from him while governing in Maharashtra.

Nitin Gadkari, bjp chief

He had great affection for me and was my guide.

It is hard to believe that Thackeray is no more. Each day, he continued his struggle with a grit that was baffling even for the doctors. As I stand next to his still, peaceful, saffron-draped body, it is difficult to imagine that he has left us.

Amitabh Bachchan

The King of Hindu Hearts Balasaheb Thackeray left us for eternity. It is true Maharashtra is orphaned.

Lata Mangeshkar

Can’t ever forget the hug the real ‘Sarkar’ gave me when he saw reel ‘Sarkar’. Balasaheb was a true epitome of power in every sense of the word.

Ram Gopal Varma, director of 'Sarkar'

Our dead are never dead to us until we have forgotten them. The memory of Bal Thackeray will live on in the memory of Mumbaikars forever.

Mahesh Bhatt, filmmaker

He lived with great conviction in his beliefs. This led him to be a great leader. Balasaheb was outspoken and a sharp observer. He will be missed deeply.

Madhur Bhandarkar, filmmaker

Thackeray was a great personality. I have lost a father figure.

Rajnikanth, Tamil superstar
