Mumbai shuts down, Uddhav appeals for calm Mumbai, November 17 Offices across Mumbai asked their employees to leave as soon as news of Thackeray's demise came in. Trains and buses departing from South Mumbai northwards were packed by 6 pm and much downtown Mumbai was deserted within an hour, according to local residents. Across Mumbai, housing societies pulled down Diwali lights as Shiv Sena activists went around asking people not to light crackers or switch on colourful lights as a mark of respect for their leader. There have been no reports of violence and traffic was not disrupted. Uddhav Thackeray appealed to party workers to stay calm and cooperate with the police. The Shiv Sena Bhawan, the party headquarters, which was lit up on Friday wore a mournful look as party workers pulled down saffron flags and pulled out Diwali lights as soon as the death of Thackeray came in. Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh said the department has deployed 20,000 police personnel across the city on “bandobust” duty. He asked Mumbaiites not to venture out of their homes today and tomorrow unless it was required. Maharashtra's Home Department said contingents of the Rapid Action Force and the State Reserve Police have been deployed in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Nashik and other cities as part of a general alert, in force for several days. Outside Matoshree, the residence of Thackeray, the police had to contend with grieving Shiv Sainiks who tried to push through the barricades. However, within minutes, the police and RAF personnel quickly cleared the road leading to the building. Mediapersons have also been asked to assemble some distance away as part of a security drill prepared by the police.
