UK ends Modi’s 10-yr boycott, talks business

Gandhinagar, October 22
Britain today ended its decade-long boycott of Gujarat when its High Commissioner to India James Bevan met Chief Minister Narendra Modi to mark a “cordial beginning” to fresh ties, with the two discussing opportunities for greater economic cooperation.

In the first engagement with Gujarat in 10 years after it snapped all ties with the state in the aftermath of the 2002 communal riots, the British High Commissioner met Modi for about 50 minutes, discussing a range of issues, including climate change and investment.

“The meeting can be described as a cordial beginning, as both were keen on taking forward the ties,” sources in the CM’s office said.

Bevan said after the meeting that active engagement with Gujarat was the right way to advance UK’s interest in the state. “This is engagement with Gujarat as a whole and not an engagement with any individual,” he said. — PTI
