Chandigarh, October 18
CBI sleuths today arrested a 2008-batch IPS officer, Deshraj Singh, posted as Superintendent of Police (City), Chandigarh, while taking Rs 1 lakh as bribe from Sector-26 police station SHO Anokh Singh for giving him a clean chit in five inquiries pending against him.

Deshraj Singh, who was recently promoted as SP, was caught taking bribe at his Sector-23 residence and Rs 1 lakh was recovered from him.

The CBI search continued late into the night. Mahesh Aggarwal, DIG, CBI, Chandigarh, said Deshraj had demanded Rs 5 lakh from Anokh for giving inquiry reports in his favour.

The officer settled for Rs 2 lakh. Anokh had gone to Deshraj’s official residence this evening to hand over Rs 1 lakh when the CBI laid a trap and arrested the officer.

He has been booked under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Sources said one of the inquiries against Anokh Singh goes back to last year when Deshraj was the Assistant Superintendent of Police (Central) and Anokh was the SHO of Sector-11 police station.

Sources said Deshraj had asked Anokh to report to him on Sunday but Anokh could not do so owing to a prior engagement.

This had upset Deshraj, who sent Anokh to the Police Lines after suspending him. Anokh reportedly had a heated altercation with Deshraj, following which his transfer orders were issued.

Anokh had claimed that the ASP had used abusive language against him.

Another inquiry was initiated against Inspector Anokh Singh (now SHO, Sector-26 police station) recently when the SHO failed to inform the SP about a theft at a former MLA’s residence in Sector 28. In the third inquiry, a heated altercation had ensued during a weekly crime review meeting.

The fourth inquiry against Inspector Anokh pertained to a Police Complaint Authority (PCA) order, which had recommended a departmental inquiry against the SHO. While raids were on at Deshraj’s residence, none of the senior police officers of the city was available for comment. The phones of both DIG Alok Kumar and SSP Naunihal Singh remained switched off.
