House panel to visit Haryana’s ‘rape-prone’ dists

Chandigarh: Close on the heels of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s visit to the state, a 30-member parliamentary committee, constituted for the welfare of the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and the Scheduled Tribes (STs), will visit the four “rape-prone” districts, Kaithal, Jind, Jhajjar and Rohtak, on October 17 to make an on-the-spot assessment of the crime situation.

Ratia (Fatehabad), October 13
A 60-year-old vegetable vendor was arrested today for repeatedly raping a 13-year-old schoolgirl for five months at Khai village in Ratia subdivision of Fatehabad.

Showing gross insensitivity, the authorities of the Government Middle School, Khai, where the victim studied in class VI, expelled the victim as well as her two sisters after she became pregnant and the matter came to their notice through some students.

The accused vendor sold eatables outside the victim’s school.

On the complaint of the victim’s father, the police today arrested Sohan Lal, after booking him under Section 376 (rape) of the IPC. “We have requested the civil surgeon to constitute a board to conduct the medical examination of the girl,” said Shamsher Singh Dahiya, DSP, Fatehabad.

The girl along with her two sisters, aged 11 and 12, belong to the nearby Nangal Dhani village.

Sohan Lal, who sold vegetables outside the school, lured the victim and allegedly raped her for over five months.

Dahiya said the matter came to the notice of the school authorities when the victim became pregnant.

The headmaster convened a meeting of the school management committee and expelled the victim as well as her two sisters from the school, fearing their presence would have an adverse impact on other students.
