Dharamsala, October 2
Two earthquakes today hit the Dharamsala region triggering panic among residents of the area. No loss of life and property was reported.

The first quake of 3.4 intensity on Richter scale hit the region at 9.15 am. It had its epicentre in the Dhauladhar hills between Palampur and Mandi district. Since the earthquake was mild, it was not felt by many residents.

The second earthquake that hit the region at 2.10 pm forced people out of their houses. Sources in the Wadia Institute of Seismology at Dharamsala said the second earthquake measured 4.5 on the Richter scale and its epicentre was in the same location in Dhauladhar hills.

Ram Kumar, a resident of Kachehri area, said he found the chair on which he was sitting move suddenly. “The fan on the roof also started swinging. Sensing that it was an earthquake, I immediately rushed out of my house,” he said.

Earthquakes are not new to Kangra district. Since the area falls in Zone 5 in terms of quake probability, mild intensity tremors hit the region. Last year, about 12 quakes of mild intensity were reported.
