Industry hails PM’s resolve on reforms
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 22
Industry bodies have welcomed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s address to the nation and said it sends the clear message that the government was on course to initiate rapid economic reforms.

The Confederation of Indian Industries said in a statement that with his actions last week and the address to the nation on Friday evening, the Prime Minister has unambiguously sent a message that the government is determined to see through the reforms that have been at the centre of the political controversy lately.

"We hope that this is the beginning of a series of reforms that the country needs to arrest the economic downtrend and to ensure higher growth for greater inclusiveness", said Adi Godrej, CII president.

Drawing comparison with the economic liberalisation of early nineties, CII said when India had the first round of economic liberalisation and reforms in 1991, there was pain and apprehension. The economics was not fully appreciated.

“Two decades down the line, I don’t think there is anyone in India, who feels we embarked on the wrong path then,” Godrej added.

Reacting to Manmohan Singh’s address to the nation on key economic policy decisions taken earlier, Sidharth Birla, vice president, FICCI said the Prime Minister has aptly underlined that the government is now fully and consciously embarked on the path of pursuing a reformist agenda.
