Ajay Banerjee/TNS

New Delhi, July 25
The raging row over land acquisition in Haryana's Rewari district has been settled for now.

After a five-hour meeting between farmers and Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda here, farmers decided to suspended their agitation. On its part, the government has agreed to hold in abeyance any acquisition of land in the area till a committee headed by Haryana Industry Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala submits a report on the status of land.

The committee will assess the need for land acquisition, Shiv Bhatia, Media Advisor to the Haryana CM, said. It will study the cases of five villages acquired in Rewari town and another 16 acquired in Bawal.

The committee has been tasked to give its report before Section 9 of the Land Acquisition Act 1894 kicks in two years from now. Till the committee gives its report, the land acquisition process shall be stalled. Section 9 deals with financial award announced for the lands by the District Collector, in this case the Deputy Commissioner.

The Bhoomi Adhigrahan Virodhi Sangarsh Samiti has been spearheading the protest against acquisition of over 3,000 acres from 21 villages near Bawal town in Rewari.
