Flood devastates Assam fields
Bijay Sankar Bora/TNS

Guwahati, July 9
The devastating flood in Assam, besides taking at least 124 lives, has left a trail of destruction especially in the agriculture sector, the backbone of state’s economy.
The flood inundated vast tracts of cropland in 26 out of the total 27 districts in the state. Farmland only in the hill district of Dima Hasao has remained unaffected by the flood.

According to Agriculture Department figures, 2,54,935 hectares of cropland has been affected and the crop loss is well over 50 per cent.

Nearly half of the flood-affected cropland i.e. 1,23,281 hectares belongs to small and medium farmers.
