Guwahati, June 30
Controversial Congress MLA Rumi Nath and her second husband Jackey Zakir were seriously injured when a mob stormed into a hotel room in Karimganj town in southern Assam last night. The couple had put up in the hotel for the night.

A team of police personnel had tough time rescuing the couple from the hotel and shift them first to hospital and then to Guwahati.

Nath, representing Borkhola assembly constituency in Barak Valley, created a furore by announcing her marriage with Zakir without divorcing her first husband Rakesh Singh with whom she has a two-year-old daughter.

The MLA along and her second husband were treated by a team of four specialist doctors of the Guwahati Medical College Hospital and were reported to be out of danger.

The injured MLA was in tears and said the culprits who had "outraged the modesty of a woman" should be brought to book.

Karimganj district Superintendent of Police Pradip Pujari said a mob of over 400 gathered in front of Hotel Nakshatra in Karimganj town, where the MLA had checked in last evening, and shouted slogans against the MLA before barging into their room and assaulting Nath as well as her second husband Jackie Zakir.

"Several police personnel were injured when the mob threw stones at them. The crowd later targeted the Karimganj police station where we shifted the two," Pujari said today.

"The police has registered three cases. While one was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by the legislator, the second was filed by a couple of local news reporters who too were assaulted by the mob. The third case is assault on policemen," the SP said.

Nath hogged headlines for having married her Facebook boyfriend Zakir without divorcing her first husband Rakesh Singh, who had filed a case with police saying she had been kidnapped.

She had disappeared with her new husband on May 21 last only to resurface in Guwahati on June 2.
