Tribune News Service

Guwahati, June 25
Flood situation in Assam took a turn for the worse today with surging water of Brahmaputra river breaching embankments at various places in two Upper Assam districts of Dhemaji and Tinsukia inundating 200 more villages and affecting one lakh persons. The situation in the rest of 12 flood-affected districts has remained unchanged. Meanwhile, the flood toll has gone up to 10 in the state.

The Army and the IAF personnel have been pressed into action in addition to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to evacuate the villagers to safer places. An old lady lost her life after being washed away in Tinsukia district, taking the toll up to ten in the second wave of floods in the state.

In Dhemaji district, Brahmaputra caused a breach of about 100 metres near Machkhowa. Nearly 35,000 persons from 41 villages have been affected by the flood in the district, including 17,000 persons in a single village called Sisirborgaon.

In Tinsukia district on the south bank of Brahmaputra, 30,000 persons have been rendered homeless by flood water in Amarpur Circle in Sadiya sub-division.
