Child falls into pit, dies

Guwahati, June 25
A six-year-old girl, Anjali Kumari Singh, today died after she fell into a water-filled pit dug up for the construction of a concrete pillar on the premises of the Raj Bhawan in Shillong, Meghalaya.

Addition Superintendent of Police, Shillong, Herbert Lyngdoh said the girl probably slipped and fell into the pit in the morning hours when it was raining heavily. A boy, Sujit Kumar, spotted her drowning in the water-filled pit and raised an alarm.

She was rushed to the Civil Hospital in Shillong where the doctors declared her brought dead. The girl was stated to be speech impaired.

The deceased was the daughter of Radhe Shyam Singh who works as a gardener in the Raj Bhavan. The police official said the deceased’s family did want post-mortem of the body.

The construction site is very close to the staff quarters where the families of the Raj Bhawan staff live.

Youth dies after falling into well

Howrah (WB): Rescuers today pulled out the body of a youth who fell into a well in Howrah district of West Bengal, more than 10 and half hours after he fell into the well.

Rausan Ali Mondal, a mason by profession, slipped and fell into the 30-foot deep well at Eksara village in Howrah district at around 3.30 PM yesterday, hours after rescuers pulled out the body of four-year-old Mahi from a deep borewll in Haryana where she was trapped for the last four days.

West Bengal Disaster Management and Fire Services Minister Javed Khan, who supervised the operations, said some local well-diggers, along with the personnel of the disaster management wing and Fire Brigade, pulled out the youth from the well at around 2.10 am and rushed him to the Howrah State General Hospital where the doctors declared the youth 'brought dead'.

Khan said the rescue team had taken the help of close-circuit cameras to locate the body in the narrow well.

The Fire minister dismissed complaints of late response by the fire brigade personnel and the disaster management team in reaching the spot after the incident. - PTI
