SAD prepares ground beneath BJP’s feet
Bathinda, June 22 For the BJP's dharna against the Central Government for increasing the price of the fuel, the front side of district administrative complex — the site of the dharna — was sprinkled with water in the morning, literally preparing the ground for the agitation. All the smiling BJP workers promptly courted arrested after raising slogan for an hour and were ferried in the buses of a private institute and taken to the police station. Due to the BJP dharna, the demolition drive at the rear of the Pukhraj Cinema was postponed as the municipal corporation officials did not get the required police force. "We were supposed to knock down the houses of 170 identified families that had encroached upon a major portion of the 100-feet road.
“We had requested for police protection but could not get it as the police was busy with the BJP's dharna. So, the exercise was postponed," said a municipal corporation officer pleading anonymity. Meanwhile, at the dharna spot, the BJP workers raised slogans against the union government amidst tight security. Nearly 12 to 15 buses of a private educational institute were lined up to ferry the Bharatiya Janata Party workers. However, only two to three could be used while taking the BJP workers to different police stations. Sources said the district administration and the police was handed over a list of the workers to be arrested a day before. "This saved the Bharatiya Janata Party workers from the long procedure of the arrest and subsequent bails. Moreover, how difficult it is to stage a dharna in the state where the agitating party has its own government? This is the same police that had confined the Yuva Morcha workers over issue of challan for traffic violation for four hours and stirred a hornet's nest a few days ago," said a Congress worker. Due to the political dharna, the municipal corporation's Senior Deputy Mayor Tarsem Goyal left the meeting held with the district administration over the issue of sewer and drinking water projects going on in the city. Goyal could attend this important meeting only for ten minutes. Meanwhile, state general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party Manjit Singh Rai and the district leaders said the fuel hike was not justified and it was the wrong policies of the Central Government that resulted in the skyrocketing prices of fuel, pinching the pockets of the common man. |
Sewage woes spill over, literally, at PWSSB meet
Bathinda, June 22 The MC PWSSB Satpal Angurwala, chief parliamentary secretary Sarup Chand Singla and Deputy Commissioner KK Yadav presided over the meeting where the ongoing water supply and sewer projects were discussed. Ironically, while the team discussed the sewer projects in the city, the main sewer line on the GT Road, which is clogged for the last few days, started throwing out muck from the storm water pipes. Unable to find the blockade near the bus stand, the sewerage board officials pumped the Power House Road motors to remove the blockade. Instead of cleaning the blockade, pressure from the pump began exerting force on the other manholes and pipes. Within an hour, sewage started flowing out of the manholes in and around the district administrative complex, judicial complex and on the court road near the bus stand. The blockade could not be cleared in a day, so the corporation had decided to clean the sewer tonight. In the Sanjay Nagar area, the corporation has completed the work on the laying of sewer and people have even started using the pipes, despite the fact that no arrangements for the disposal of sewage has been made. "There are some technical glitches in laying the pipe. The sewer department has been told to expedite the process and in the mean time, provide alternative source of disposal to avoid blockade in the newly-laid pipes," said municipal commissioner Uma Shankar Gupta. For the sewer on Thandi Sarak, which the sewer department had declared was damaged, it was decided that the department will submit a detailed project report (DPR) on the laying of parallel pipes to save the area from facing blocked sewer. The wewer on Thandi Sarak has reportedly outlived its life, but the corporation is getting it de-silted from a Delhi-based agency. Keeping this in view, it has been decided that a parallel pipe be laid as an alternative so that even if the archaic pipes get damaged, the alternative can prove helpful. The Sewerage Board has been directed to get all the de-silting work completed before July 10. MC officials have been asked to ensure proper safety measures at places where sewer work is going on to avoid mishaps that have occurred in the recent past. Dedicated manpower has been assigned for the maintenance of existing sewer and new projects. An SDO and a JE each have been designated exclusively for the maintenance of the existing sewers as well as overseeing the existing works. Those present at the meeting included the Senior Deputy Mayor Tarsem Goyal, district advisory committee's advisor Om Prakash Sharma and Rakesh Singla. Later, the team visited the ongoing projects in Sanjay Nagar, Lal Singh Basti and Gurukul Road. |
Jatt’s the way: Juliet keeps her date with fans in city
Bathinda, June 22 And, it seems Neeru Bajwa has taken the title of 'Katrina Kaif of Punjabi films' a little too seriously. And she seems to have learnt the ways of the Bollywood's leading lady too. Well, how else would one explain the way she keeps her fans waiting for long? Thankfully, unlike last time, she brought smiles to the faces of her fans when she arrived at a city mall, albeit two hours behind schedule. And like Katrina Kaif, Neeru too chose to keep her visit short and sweet, rather crisp. She had arrived with her co-star for the film 'Jatt and Juliet', singer-actor Diljeet Dosanjh. At the press meet, the duo spoke about their film "Jatt and Juliet". The film is about how a desi boy and a sophisticated modern girl fight and then finally fall for each other. Sounds like yet another NRI girl-meets-desi boy flick? Well, let's wait and watch. Looking quite fazed as well bored of being asked about the protests against the use of the allegedly 'vulgar' lyrics in his songs, when Diljeet was asked the same question again, all that he chose to say was: "Rabb sab nu changa rakhey". |
People appealed not to leave treatment midway
Bathinda, June 22 The awareness programme was organized under the District Health Society-Revised National TB Control Programme (RNCTP) with the guidance of Dr Ashok Monga, District TB Officer, by the communication facilitator of the State Health Society, RNTCP Punjab, Gagan Goyal. At the workshop, people were informed about the symptoms, precautions and treatment (DOT system) for the disease. Goyal urged the people to get their sputum examined immediately in case anyone discovered the symptoms of TB. The symptoms can be cough for more than two weeks, blood in sputum, loss of appetite, loss of weight and pain in chest. Goyal said the sputum examination is done free of cost in government hospitals. He also appealed to the people not to leave the treatment midway. In case any patient gives up the treatment halfway, then the disease becomes incurable. So, the patient should complete the course of the medicine, ranging from six to eight months, to get rid of the disease forever. Medicine is given free of cost threw under the Directly Observed Treatment (DOT) system in the government hospitals. Pathania asked those present to make others aware the disease. |
