2012 seoul nuclear security summit
PM invites Korean investments in solar, nuclear sectors

Seoul, March 26
Against the backdrop of South Korea seeking land to set up nuclear reactors in India, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today asked Korean businesses to help the country expand its nuclear power sector.

"We are committed to increasing energy efficiency and share of renewables, including solar and nuclear power, in our energy mix," he told a group of Korean CEOs.

Singh's remarks came a day after South Korean President Lee Myung-bak requested that the Indian Government allocate a site for Korean nuclear reactors. "There will be large business opportunities and I am aware of Korean capabilities in environmentally friendly technologies," Singh said at the meeting organised by Korean industry chambers.

Among the CEOs present was Kim Joong-Kyum of the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) which has interests in nuclear power that meets 45 per cent of Korea's electricity requirements.

A joint statement issued after Singh held talks with Lee said that both leaders expressed satisfaction at the conclusion of a bilateral civil nuclear cooperation agreement during the State visit of the President of India to ROK in July 2011.

"Recognising criticality of non-polluting nuclear energy in economic development of countries, they agreed to discuss specific items of cooperation with the ongoing review of safety and security aspects of operating nuclear plants," the statement had said.
