As the Tawi enters the city with clean water, it turns into an obnoxious slurry of sewage and garbage by the time it exits the city just 3 km downstream. Jammu Tribune launches a campaign to identify the pollution sources and what it’s doing to the city’s lifeline

Unrestrained release of sewage and dumping of urban waste has squeezed life out of the river.

Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev remembered
Jammu, March 23
Youths pay floral tributes to Shaheed Bhagat Singh in Jammu on Friday. Various city-based organisations paid tributes to the martyrs of 1931 in connection with the Balidan Diwas. The Jammu Kashmir Democratic Front paid floral tributes to Bhagat Singh at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Park, Shopping Centre, Bakshi Nagar.

NEWSMAKERS MAKE THE DAY FOR TRIBUNE
Jammu, March 23
On the banks of the Tawi, a galaxy of citizens of Jammu and Kashmir came together at Royal Retreat today to celebrate the launch of Jammu Tribune by the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, in the presence of the chief guest, Governor NN Vohra, and other luminaries.

Gujjar jewellery a hit
Jammu, March 23
Dr Javaid Rahi, chief editor, Gojri, makes a point at the Gujjar Heritage Exhibition in Jammu on Friday. The rarest of Gujjar jewellery and their oldest costume attracted visitors on the fifth day of the ongoing Gujjar Heritage Exhibition. A number of dignitaries, tourists and high officials from the state visited five galleries at the Kala Kendra and appreciated a number of rare exhibits.

Teachers’ body to hold sit-in
Jammu, March 23
The Jammu University Teachers’ Association will organise a two-hour sit-in on March 26 and 27 to press for the release of arrears implemented under the 6th Pay Commission and extension of the age of superannuation to 65. 

Natrang artistes get national scholarships for theatre
Jammu, March 23
The Ministry of Culture, Government of India, has awarded national scholarships to two young artistes of Natrang, Gopi Sharma and Kritika Bhau, to undergo training in theatre acting under Natrang Director Balwant Thakur.

Queen Blues win women T-20 tourney
Jammu, March 23

Queen Blues held their nerves to seal a thrilling win by 3 runs in a low-scoring final to claim the 1st Women T-20 Cricket Cup at MA Stadium here today. Queen Blues accumulated 103 runs for the loss of three wickets. Anju played a fine knock of 44 runs off 43 balls. She drove the bowlers with exclusive timing. Payal also contributed useful 37 runs.

Mystery shrouds guard’s death
Jammu, March 23
A security guard working at a factory today died under mysterious circumstances in the Gangyal area of the city. The deceased has been identified as Surinder Kumar (20), a resident of Nowshera.

Teenager kidnapped in Kathua
Jammu, March 23
A teenager was allegedly kidnapped from Mai Chak village in Kathua district today. The police said Mohammad Gazi made a written complaint alleging that his 14-year-old daughter was kidnapped by a person, identified as Gernail Singh of Raj Bagh in Kathua town and his accomplices from the village.

2 held with 540 Corex bottles
Jammu, March 23
The police arrested two persons here today and recovered 540 bottles of banned Corex from their possession. The arrested persons have been identified as Sandeep Rana of Shastri Nagar, Pathankote, and Abdul Hamid of the Sunjwan area.
