New Delhi, March 12
As the ruling coalition geared up to face a fresh challenge from the Opposition in Parliament, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asserted that the government has the numbers needed to ensure its stability.

"I think dealing with pressure is part of parliamentary life. I am confident that we have all the numbers that are needed," he told reporters ahead of the inauguration of the crucial budget session of Parliament by the President this morning.

Expressing confidence that the session would run smoothly, the PM said: “We are willing to discuss and debate all issues on the floor of the House. I appeal to all political parties to work together and cooperate in meeting the challenges.”

The PM’s remarks came amid talks of the possibility of realignment of political forces in the wake of the Congress’ poor showing in the recent Assembly elections.

The speculation about a third front gained momentum over the past few weeks after several non-Congress Chief Ministers joined hands to oppose the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC).

Much to the UPA’s embarrassment, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee also opposed the move, describing it as an attack on the country’s federal strucure.

The Opposition has already given firm indications that it would nail the government on every single important issue. Opposition parties, including the BJP and the CPI, even criticised the President’s speech in Parliament which outlined the UPA government’s policies.
