Move to curtail EC’s powers sparks row
New Delhi, February 21
Faced with a fresh controversy over its proposal to dilute the Election Commission’s powers by taking away the model code of conduct from its purview and giving it statutory backing, an embarrassed government today rushed to clarify that it was not considering any such move.

Punjab DGP’s wings clipped for ‘fighting’ jail drug mafia 
Patiala, February 21
Upset over his “outspoken attitude against the drug mafia and the political backing” it got, the Punjab Government has rendered senior IPS officer and DGP (Jails) Shashi Kant sans security cover. The state government has withdrawn all three official vehicles assigned to him leaving him without any official vehicle for himself or his security officials.

DGCA gives Kingfisher a day to submit flight schedule
New Delhi, February 21
The civil aviation regulator has given Kingfisher Airlines a day to come up with a revised schedule for aircraft that the carrier is still operating. The DGCA also ordered a safety surveillance of the debt-ridden airline in view of mass exodus of staff, including senior pilots, and more than 50 per cent of fleet on ground.

The Health Ministry is in favour of banning smokeless forms of tobacco which are being used by 25 per cent of the population and are known to contain chemical components with serious implications for human health.
