Iran proclaimed advances in nuclear know-how on Wednesday, including new centrifuges able to enrich uranium much faster, a move that may hasten a drift towards confrontation with the West over suspicions it is seeking the means to make atomic bombs.

Pressure on India to cut trade ties with Iran
New Delhi, February 15
While India is facing increasing pressure from the US and other Western countries to snap trade ties with Iran, it will have to weigh its options carefully as Iran is not just an important crude oil supplier but is also a prospective large export market.

On sticky turf, India treads cautiously

As Israel and Iran continued to play an intense blame game over Monday’s car bomb attack in Delhi, India for the second consecutive day today did the proverbial tightrope walk trying hard to manage its two important strategic partners. Dubbing Iran as the world’s biggest exporter of terror, the Israeli government from Day 1 has been blaming Tehran for having perpetuated the attack.

Relations between the Congress and its ally, the Nationalist Congress Party, has hit a new low after police seized Rs 1 crore from the car of Congress MLA from Amravati, Raosaheb Shekhawat, son of President Pratibha Patil while he was campaigning for party candidates in the civic polls. While the opposition BJP alleged that the money was meant for distribution among voters and demanded an inquiry into the source of the cash.

Punjab govt defaults on payment to 40,000 mothers
Chandigarh, February 15
The failure of the Punjab Government to give incentive money to 40,000 women who delivered babies in civil hospitals is likely to hit the programme launched to promote deliveries in medical institutions. Official sources said that the state government hasn’t made any payment in this regard since November. The state government has to pay Rs 1,000 as incentive to every woman who delivers her baby in a government hospital.
