9 factory workers charred to death in Roorkee
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, February 9
Nine employees of a factory were killed and six injured in a major fire in Roorkee.
The fire broke out late last evening on the premises of Mirk India in the Libberhadi industrial area at Mandavali village of Roorkee. Workers at the unit, which supplies parts to Onida, were carrying out moulding work. Thermocol sheets lying nearby caught fire from the sparks emanating from iron girders being moulded by a machine.

Seven fire tenders were requisitioned to tackle the situation. Additional tenders were also called in from nearby regions later as wind intensified the flames. By 2 am, fire fighters managed to put out the fire.

Haridwar District Magistrate D Senthyl Pendiyan has ordered a magisterial inquiry. The Haridwar ADM will probe the matter and submit a report in a fortnight.

The Haridwar District Magistrate has recommended compensation for the victims in accordance with factory laws. Chief Minister BC Khanduri has expressed deep shock over the tragic incident.
