Ministry asks Adjutant General's branch NEW DELHI: Ahead of the Supreme Court hearing on the subject, the Defence Ministry has written to the Adjutant General's (AG) branch of the Army to correct its record to show the year of birth of Army Chief Gen. V.K. Singh as 1950 contrary to his stand that he was born one year later. The letter was issued to the AG's branch last week to correct its record and show May 10, 1950 as the date of birth of Gen Singh, sources said here. The AG's branch, which is the official record keeper in the service, has maintained Gen Singh's date of birth as May 10, 1951, although the military secretary's branch records it as May 10, 1950. The move appears to be to reconcile the two dates in Army records and is an indication of the tough stance of the government against Gen Singh, who has moved the Supreme Court on his age issue. The subject will come up for hearing in the apex court on February 3. In its first order rejecting Army chief's contention on July 21, the Defence Ministry had asked the AG's branch to record 1950 as Gen Singh's year of birth.
Normalisation of Indo-Pak ties 'compelling necessity': Gilani DAVOS: Hopeful of normalisation of Indo-Pak ties, Pakistan Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani has described it as a "compelling necessity" and said his interior secretary will soon visit India to take forward the talks on outstanding issues between the two countries. During a meeting with the Minister of State for Planning, Science and Technology and Earth Science, Ashwani Kumar, in Davos on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Gilani expressed hope for normalisation of bilateral ties. Kumar, who was here to attend the WEF as an Indian government representative, told PTI that Gilani also asked him to convey his greetings to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and expressed the view that normalisation of relations between the two countries was a "compelling necessity". Kumar said he told Gilani that the people of the two countries had for long yearned for peace and that the recent policy announcements on both sides to facilitate cross-border trade would strengthen the process of normalisation of ties. During their meeting, Gilani said his interior secretary would soon visit India to carry forward the official negotiations on outstanding issues. The minister also met Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, who too are in Davos to attend the summit.
