US signals major cut in military aid to Pakistan 
Obama signs defence Bill that may see 60% reduction in $1.1bn grant to Islamabad

Washington, January 1
US President Barack Obama has signed into law a massive $662-billion defence spending Bill that also seeks to suspend a big chunk of $1.1 billion military aid to Pakistan, despite his “serious reservations” about provisions regulating detention and prosecution of suspected terrorists.

TMC rules out compromise on Lokpal Bill

Hardening its stand on the Lokpal Bill, UPA ally Trinamool Congress today ruled out any compromise on the Lokayukta provision and said the government should have faced voting in the Rajya Sabha.

EC takes up ‘vulnerability mapping’ of voters in U’ khand
Nainital, January 1
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a fresh set of instructions to the poll-bound states, including Uttarakhand, with regard to vulnerability mapping. The ECI has defined vulnerability as the susceptibility of any voter or section of voters, whether or not living in a geographically identifiable area, to be fully prevented from or influenced upon in relation to the exercise of his right to vote in a free and fair manner, through intimidation or use of undue influence or force of any kind on him.

SAD’s third list triggers more infighting
Chandigarh, January 1
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has announced the third list of its candidates with 10 names. The Ludhiana South seat has now been allotted to Mayor Hakim Singh Giaspura. The seat was earlier allotted to Balwinder Singh Bains who was expelled from the party along with his brother for anti-party activities.

Consumer panel sees Adarsh-like scam

Holding that the allotment of some dwelling units made by the Army Welfare Housing Organisation (AWHO) in its project at Sector 20, Panchkula, was in violation of rules, the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has observed that the exercise was done “presumably with a view to accommodate favourites and everything does not appear to have been done in a transparent manner.”

India, Pak share lists of N-facilities

India and Pakistan today exchanged lists of their nuclear installations and facilities under a two-decade-old pact that prohibits attacks on atomic assets of each other.’

Qualified FIs can invest directly in stock market
New Delhi, January 1
The government has decided to allow Qualified Foreign Investors (QFIs) to directly invest in the Indian stock markets. The Finance Ministry said in a statement that the move would widen the class of investors, attract more foreign funds, reduce market volatility and deepen the Indian capital market. QFIs have been already permitted to have direct access to Indian mutual funds schemes pursuant to the Budget announcement of 2011-12. Today's decision is the next logical step in that direction, it said.
