Punjab poll date to be announced today

The Election Commission will announce the schedule for assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur on Saturday at 4:30pm, reports said.

Uttar Pradesh is likely to have a five-phase election, possibly in February and the other four states are likely to have a single phase poll, acording to reports. All eyes are on UP which has a total of 403 assembly seats where Mayawati will try to save her turf and Mulayam Singh Yadav would fight tooth and nail to claim it back. Congress has entered into a poll alliance with Ajit Singh's RLD party in the state.

A meeting of Congress' Central Election Committee took place on Friday night to finalise seats. The EC on Friday held discussions with home secretary RK Singh on the availability of para-military forces for the polls.
