Lokpal Bill
House panel seeks more time
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 5
A day after Team Anna held a successful car and bike rally in protest against the government demanding a strong Lokpal Bill, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee, looking into drafting of the anti-corruption Lokpal Bill, has asked for one more week to submit its report in Parliament.

Therefore, the Parliamentary panel, which was supposed to submit its report by December 7 in the House, will now miss the deadline. Sources said Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari has asked Singhvi to meet him and explain the reason for seeking the extension.

Miffed with the reports of the Lokpal draft which suggest that lower bureaucracy and judiciary haven't been put under its ambit, Anna Hazare has threatened to launch a fresh stir. Team Anna members are meeting in the Capital next week to plan a strategy for the proposed protest demanding a strong Lokpal Bill. This time, the team is also planning to invite members of all political parties to share the dais with Anna, something which was not allowed during the previous protest at Ramlila Ground.

An Anna associate said after the one-day protest by Anna at Jantar Mantar on December 11, team members will hold a core committee meeting on December 14 and 15 to chalk out the plan from December 27 onward. Activists have already warned of a

major agitation between December 27 and January 5 next at Ramlila Ground if changes are not made in the proposed anti-graft law.

The parliamentary panel studying the Lokpal Bill on Thursday favoured exclusion of Group C officials, the bottom layer of government officials, from the anti-graft body. This led to 10 members submitting a note of dissent on the draft report
