A telephone call originating from Nepal and inter- cepted by Indian intelligence agencies enabled a joint police team from Haryana and Delhi last night to recover five kg of explosives, hidden in a blue Indica car parked outside the Ambala Cantt Railway Station.

SC slashes Uphaar victims’ compensation to half
New Delhi, October 13
The Supreme Court today reduced to half the compensation awarded to the victims of the June 1997 fire tragedy at Uphaar theatre here. Families of those killed in the above-20 age group would now get Rs 10 lakh against Rs 18 lakh awarded by the Delhi High Court. For the below-20 age group, the compensation has been brought down from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 7.5 lakh.

SC lists tighter norms for property transfer
New Delhi, October 13
In a decisive move to check the generation of black money and tame the land mafia, the Supreme Court has ruled that property transfers through sale agreement (SA), general power of attorney (GPA) and will would be invalid with immediate effect, except in ‘genuine’ cases involving transactions among relatives or with builders.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, has ended India’s import dependence on the West for ejection systems needed to launch nano-satellites into space.

The project is part of the golden jubilee year (2009-10) celebrations of IIT-Kanpur
The satellite’s production cost is Rs 15 lakh while 
infrastructure and other costs are around Rs 2 crore
It will take images in the infrared zone and transmit 
these to the ground station at IIT-Kanpur
The project started after a go-ahead from former ISRO chief Madhavan Nair in 2008
