After registering a case against former Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran and his elder brother Kalanithi Maran in connection with the controversial Aircel-Maxis deal, the CBI today raided nine offices and residences of the duo in Delhi and Chennai.

Jagjit Singh dies of brain haemorrhage in Mumbai, funeral today

Mumbai, October 10
Ghazal king Jagjit Singh, who regaled music lovers for over four decades with his soulful renditions, died of brain haemorrhage in Mumbai today. He was 70. The singer, who rediscovered the ghazal genre for the common Indian in the 70s and 80s, was admitted to the Lilavati hospital on September 23.

Army looks to strengthen forces along Pak, China borders
New Delhi, October 10
In a move that will be interpreted in many ways across strategic circles globally, the Indian Army is looking to ramp up its numbers along the western and northern borders, facing Pakistan and China, respectively. The matter was discussed at the five-day Army Commanders’ conference that began here today.

2G: CAG offers to explain Rs 1.76 lakh crore loss

With the figure of Rs 1.76 lakh crore loss in 2G Spectrum allocation under dispute, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Vinod Rai today offered to explain it to Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC). The PAC is set to re-examine the case in view of a Congress member’s demand.

Punjab jails promote cigarettes to maintain inmates!
Bathinda, October 10
While the Punjab Government has banned smoking at public places, it continues to provide round-the-clock supply of beedis and cigarettes at all central and district jails in the state. The exercise generates handsome revenue, which, in turn, is spent on the welfare of inmates. The state has seven central and six districts jails that house 18,000 inmates. On the one hand these jails have been under the scanner for drug abuse, on the other hand the state government itself is promoting similar habits among jail inmates.
