Govt can’t change purpose of acquired land, rules SC

Land acquired by the government or its instrumentalities for a specific public purpose cannot be changed and transferred to private individuals or corporate bodies, the Supreme Court has held.

SC panel issues arrest warrant against SSP

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has issued an arrest warrant against Gautam Budh Nagar SSP Jyoti Narayan for failing to investigate seven alleged rape cases in the twin villages of Bhatta-Parsaul during a clash between farmers and the police on May 7.

Last year, on July 22, when Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal launched the prototype of a $35 low-cost computing device, the cheapest anywhere, critics said it would be impossible to develop. Today, Sibal launched ‘Aakash’, the world’s lowest priced (Rs 2,250 per unit) touch-screen computing and internet access device, which will allow people with humble means a chance to access the same set of web information which the rich access.

Punjab Assembly passes Right to Service Bill

The Punjab Assembly on Wednesday unanimously passed the Right to Service Bill-2011 after Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal assured the Opposition that their suggestions on extension of services under the Bill and making the bureaucracy accountable would be followed. The Bill provides for time-bound delivery of 67 citizen-centric services, including municipal services like water and sewerage connections and sanction of building plans, to the public.

Punjab, Haryana farmers meet PM over fertiliser rates

Punjab and Haryana farmers today took their woes regarding ‘low’ minimum support price (MSP) for paddy, cotton and maize and rising fertiliser prices to the Capital. They staged a dharna near Jantar Mantar and presented a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar who, they said, promised to meet them again next week.
