Supreme Court permits Endosulfan export, but with certain riders

New Delhi, September 30
Retaining the ban on the production and domestic sale of carcinogenic pesticide Endosulfan, the Supreme Court today allowed the export of existing stocks with various companies under strict packaging and transportation safety norms.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice SH Kapadia permitted the companies to export 1,100 tonnes of the pesticide to meet their contractual obligations, which would also facilitate liquidation of the banned chemical.

The court asked the companies and the government to provide details relating to the cost involved in the safe disposal of the pesticide and the raw material that would remain even after the exports. The remaining stock would have to be incinerated. — TNS
