SGPC poll may be put off, Sehajdharis can now vote
Centre withdraws 2003 notification, claims it was issued without application of mind

In a surprising turn of events, the Centre today withdrew the October 2003 notification debarring Sehajdhari Sikhs from exercising franchise in the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee elections. The Centre claimed the notification had been issued “without application of mind”. The strategic withdrawal came just 17 days prior to the SGPC elections.

Sen resigns ahead of impeachment move

Ahead of the impeachment motion against him in the Lok Sabha on Monday, Justice Soumitra Sen today resigned as judge of the Calcutta High Court. "I have decided not to go to the Lok Sabha and instead put in my papers," Sen, who was to have appeared before the Lok Sabha on September 5, told PTI here.

JCO dies as Army foils infiltration bid
Srinagar, September 1
An Indian soldier was killed and another hurt while thwarting an infiltration bid and two ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops in the strategic Keran sector in north Kashmir. Three Pakistan soldiers were also reportedly killed in the retaliatory fire by the Army. The exchange of fire was going on till the last reports came in.

India, China deny tiff on high seas

India and China have separately denied reports in a UK newspaper which hinted that the navies of the two neighbours had a tiff off the coast of Vietnam in July in the South China Sea. The Indian External Affairs Ministry and the Ministry of Defence in separate denials have made it clear that there was no confrontation.
