At a time when the UPA government is facing criticism for not pushing reforms, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said today given the uncertainties in the global economy, and the challenges in the domestic economy, a 9 per cent growth target for the 12th Plan is feasible only if some difficult decisions can be taken.

The Election Commission has directed the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) to submit a report Punjab CEO told to submit report on police chief PS Gill (R) and keep close tabs on DS Guruwith regard to allegations received by it against state DGP PS Gill. Navy gets stealth frigate Satpura
Continuing with its warship-building programme, India today commissioned its second indigenous stealth frigate, INS Satpura, which is the biggest in its class in the world. The ship, which is Stealth frigate Satpura was commissioned into the Navy in Mumbai 143m long, can tactically fire weapons even before the enemy detects it. This one comes 15 months after the first such ship, the INS Shivalik, was commissioned and includes a provision to fit the deadly super cruise missile, the BrahMos, at a later stage.

Undertaking its first major expansion since 1978, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP) is setting up 35 new border outposts to plug the existing gaps in defences along the Himalayan frontier.

Ship with Indian crew hijacked
Mumbai, August 20
Somali pirates hijacked a tanker managed by an Indian firm and with 21 Indian sailors on board today from an Omani port, said the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) and a Gulf shipping source said. This is the second such incident in the Gulf Arab state's waters since January.

While some telecom operators in the country have already been carrying out trials for the launch of the next generation of mobile services, the process got an additional impetus yesterday with the telecom sector regulator, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), releasing a consultation paper to usher in the next era of high-speed wireless services.
