PM: 9% growth not possible without tough decisions

At a time when the UPA government is facing criticism for not pushing reforms, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said today given the uncertainties in the global economy, and the challenges in the domestic economy, a 9 per cent growth target for the 12th Plan is feasible only if some difficult decisions can be taken.

DGP Gill, Principal Secy to Badal under EC watch
New Delhi, August 20
The Election Commission has directed the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) to submit a report with regard to allegations received by it against state DGP PS Gill. The EC also directed the CEO to watch the activities of DS Guru, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, so that he is not able to influence any election-related official or process.

Navy gets stealth frigate Satpura
Continuing with its warship-building programme, India today commissioned its second indigenous stealth frigate, INS Satpura, which is the biggest in its class in the world. The ship, which is 143m long, can tactically fire weapons even before the enemy detects it. This one comes 15 months after the first such ship, the INS Shivalik, was commissioned and includes a provision to fit the deadly super cruise missile, the BrahMos, at a later stage.

ITBP deployment along China border to go up

Undertaking its first major expansion since 1978, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP) is setting up 35 new border outposts to plug the existing gaps in defences along the Himalayan frontier. 

AIEEE to go online

After CAT, its now the All-India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) scheduled to be held nationwide on April 29, 2012, which will go online. Though the online mode was an option this year as well, but a majority of students opted for the conventional pen and paper mode. 

Ship with Indian crew hijacked
Mumbai, August 20
Somali pirates hijacked a tanker managed by an Indian firm and with 21 Indian sailors on board today from an Omani port, said the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) and a Gulf shipping source said. This is the second such incident in the Gulf Arab state's waters since January.
