Protest a constitutional right, says Anna
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 18
Proclaiming that it was his “constitutional right” to protest, social activist Anna Hazare today informed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh about his decision to go on an indefinite fast from August 16 if the points raised by Team Anna in its version of the Jan Lokpal Bill are not incorporated in the draft introduced in the coming monsoon session.

"I have written to the Prime Minister about our fast at Jantar Mantar from August 16. It is our constitutional right to protest, so when the government says that it will crush our andolan like Baba Ramdev's, it is not right,” Anna said Anna maintained that none of the scams in the recent part, including Adarsh housing, Taj corridor, CWG, cash-for-votes, would get covered under the govermnment’s draft

Questioning the PM’s honesty, Swami Agnivesh, a core member of Team Anna, said that Manmohan Singh had been elected to the Rajya Sabha after being shown as a resident of Assam after renting a room in the house of former Chief Minister Hiteshwar Saikia.

“You (Singh) got elected from Assam saying you are a resident of the state. You are not from Assam. You are from Punjab. PM talks about honesty. What is this, honesty?” Agnivesh said. In his letter, Anna tried punching holes in the government's stand on the anti-corruption law alleging that the Centre and state governments were pointing fingers at each other to avoid a strong institution to fight corruption.

Meanwhile, the Congress launched an all-out offensive against Hazare, asking him to look inward before labelling others corrupt. Seething with the group’s direct attack on the PM, the party sought an explanation from Anna on Justice P B Sawant's report which had indicted the Trust he was associated with in a graft case.
