Girl stabbed in her eyes for resisting rape Lucknow, June 19 While one of the accused - a 15-year-old Class 11 student Niranjan - has been arrested, another petty criminal 17-year-old Kuldeep is absconding.
Superintendent of Police Kannauj Rajendra Singh today suspended Sub Inspector Shivshankar Singh and constable Fakhruddin of Gursahayganj police station for failing to register an FIR in the case and providing timely medical aid to the survivor when her father first approached the police station on Friday evening. It was only after media intervention that the case received attention and the police swung into action getting 14-year-old Priti medical aid. However, the insensitivity of the local police caused delay that has cost the girl her eyesight. Admitted to Kanpur’s government Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital or Hallet Hospital, the condition of the girl was stated to be serious. According to eye surgeon R N Kushwaha, an emergency operation was carried on the eyes but whether she would be able to see would be known only in a few days time when the swelling subsides. “The left eye is badly damaged and may be beyond repair. We may be able to partially retrieve the right eye. Once the swelling subsides an ultrasound would provide the correct picture”, said Dr Kushwaha. The incident occurred in the evening of Friday in Bhurpurwa village under Gursahayganj police station in Kannauj while the minor girl was going to the fields to relieve herself. When she was accosted by two teenagers, both minors who recently took the Class 10 and 12 examinations - she raised an alarm causing them to beat her up and pierce her eyes. Finally an FIR for attempt to rape and murder was registered under appropriate sections of the IPC. After preliminary examination at the local PHC, she was referred to the Kanpur government hospital. In another case a 19- year-old dalit girl was allegedly raped by a youth in Ranipur Beladi village in Basti, today confirmed police sources. The body of yet another unclothed unidentified 25-year-old woman was found in the Delhi- Shamli passenger train at Saharanpur railway station this morning. The police are investigating the matter and have not ruled out rape and murder.”
