Notwithstanding the threat and ridicule heaped by Anna Hazare and his Civil Society on the ministers in the Joint Drafting Committee (JDC) of the Lokpal Bill, the latter reiterated their commitment to finalising the draft Bill by June 30.

Banks may pass burden of RBI’s hike in benchmark rates to consumers
New Delhi, June 16
Brushing aside concerns on slowing growth, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today went ahead with a 25 basis points increase in benchmark rates, the 10th hike in 15 months. The repo (rate at which RBI lends to banks) and reverse repo (rate at which it borrows) were raised by 25 bps each. These now stand at 7.50 per cent and 6.50 per cent, respectively.

Iran calls off talks with India over IPI gas pipeline
New Delhi, June 16
Frustrated with New Delhi for its ambivalence on the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline, Tehran has called off talks with India on the ambitious project. “The IPI pipeline is no longer on the agenda (of the two countries)…of course, Iran is willing to give a guarantee (to India) on the security of the pipeline,” highly placed sources said today.

13-day strike at Maruti ends
Management to reinstate 11 sacked employees
Gurgaon, June 16
The 13-day strike at Maruti Suzuki Ltd’s Manesar plant was called off today after the management decided to reinstate 11 sacked employees. The workers have agreed to resume work, though they have asked for a holiday tomorrow (to be compensated later). An enquiry would be held against the sacked (now reinstated) employees, but there will be no vindictive approach, the management stated.

Eminent agricultural scientist Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon was appointed Vice Chancellor of Punjab Agriculture University (PAU) today.
