Would you able to guess this one right —who is the mother of all deadly sins? While you rake up your grey cells, and come up with your choice of the deadliest sin, we tell you who tops the chart. Monotony!

Yes, it is the rigmarole, which is counted as the mother of all sins. It is this very cut-and-dried monotony that can create cracks in passion and it is this monotony that wouldn't let you ever have a stable job, or maybe a stable relationship (this is debatable). From national and international models gathered for the conference of Northern India Institute of Fashion technology's (NIIFT), for their annual design collection show Anukama 11, we ask what gives them a break from modelling. Interestingly, alternate career or better said alternate passion is what drags the drabness out of their work. While for some, the world begins and ends on the ramp. We let them enjoy their far-sightedness in life!

Anna, international beauty from Eastern Europe, is coming to Chandigarh for the first time. Communication is a little problem with her, she doesn't understand much English. However, internationally renowned choreographer Kaushik Ghosh tries sign language and it works. "I came to India for the first Wills Lakme Fashion Week and stayed back for good," she answers in sign language, which is interesting to note. Anna loves modelling and an alternate profession brings twinkle in her eyes. We were bang right. "Movies, acting, Bollywood, if ever things work well, this would be something she would want to do."

Anna, the new model on the block, gives a good thought on alternate careers, while others, the been-there-done-that gang and those who believe in the word, have interesting plans to share. Model Tina Chatwal is all set to open her own grooming school in Delhi. She would like to open schools in Chandigarh and Ludhiana as well. "Professionally, it is always good if we have something in hand to do. This, however, does not mean that models look for alternate professions because of the limited ramp. Don't we still look to models like Naomi Campbell? A second career or passion in hand only enhances experience," she adds, quickly sharing her summer perfect mantra on having a lot of yoghurt in summer.

Barkha, another model who swears by Boroline as the best cream for the face, has taken up deejaying and she loves to dabble in it as well. "I wanted to do deejaying for a long time," she says after spending ten long years in the modelling industry. "Not that I am bored, music is my passion and I love to deejay. These days I am working out a way to strike a balance between the two."

And if you thought it is a done thing for someone who has spent 'ages' in modelling to pick an alternate career, hear what the relatively new model Chahat Sabaji has to say. "I think I am smart that ways," she adds with a puckish grin, "I work as an acting faculty with Kishore Namit Acting School, something I like doing." Having shared her alternate career, Chahat strongly adheres that age has nothing to do with modelling. "Come on, we have seen models for 15-20 years and they still look great. A fallback career is a personal choice that I made."

Sahiba is looking at movies, and so is the male model Puneet Sangwan. This model from Delhi has figured out how one can slip from one career to another - from modelling to the obvious - Bollywood. Did we expect something else!

Fashion stop

International fashion choreographer Kaushik Gosh sees Punjab as a growing market for fashion. "We will soon have many fashion weeks in Punjab. We see new models and designers looking at this region as a new fashion stop." The show would be held on the June 14 at Tagore Theatre. Anukama 11 will showcase 29 collections by the graduating students of Fashion Design. Each student has individually worked on a theme and would present five ensembles related to that theme.

Jai Nair and Atul Banmoria
GURU-SHISHYA: Jai Nair and Atul Banmoria

Jai Kumar Nair, 24, is busy pursuing his dream in the field of entertainment. Winner of many dance reality shows, Jai has a dance academy to his name. In Chandigarh, to meet another reality dance show contestant Atul Banmoria, Jai is basking in the glory of his success.

"I have been acting and dancing for more than a decade now. I am glad that people recognise me and all this I owe to Dance India Dance," shares Jai, one of the four finalists of the show. Jai started his career in acting and dance early, but fame came with the win in Boogie Woogie Mahayudh Solo Championship in 2007.

"I believe the only way to grow is to share knowledge, so I started my dance school," shares Jai who has been kept busy with Dance Ke Superstar. His next, ambitious project? "There is this international music video that I have choreographed. Sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, Enrique Iglesias would also be part of it," he says. "But trust me, I have worked really hard for all this," he adds an instant later.

Having battled the tough world of glamour, Jai feels for all youngsters, "Reality shows are a great platform; they make you a star overnight. Yet, the long rehearsals and expectations of one's team members, mentors, family and friends are huge. The only thing that goes in favour of young kids is their unbridled energy," says Jai. This is where he brings in the role of parents. "I am fortunate that my parents were supportive. In fact, when kids strive to achieve, it is the parents who need to boost them," adds Jai who had an acting stint in Tum Mil to Sahi and Fast Forward.

Success Mantra
Tread your own path
Jasmine Singh

In spite of obstacles, pressures and dangers of treading a new path, if you can still do what you want to, your life on this earth is justified, believes Amardeep S Dahiya, a successful entrepreneur and businessman from the city. Acclaimed writer and successful Privatisation and Management Consultant in Eastern Europe, Amardeep is all for keeping the faith alive and walking on a path that others would probably never take due to the fear of failure.

A bachelors in Business Administration and a Masters in Business Administration from Schiller International University, Heidelberg, Amardeep is still looking for new paths. He is ready with two new books, Desert Hotel and Guru Gobind Singh, The Founder Of Khalsa. Also chairman of Global Punjab Society, Chandigarh Chapter, he shares his success mantra.

Be positive

He laughs, "Yes if only everyone could 'be positive'. I believe if you can take on everything with the right attitude, nothing can stop you from achieving what you want. However, the challenge in life is to put up a positive front under adverse conditions.

Be original

It is easy to go with others' beliefs and ideas, but coming up with original thoughts and then going ahead with them is what can make us stand out from the rest of the lot. Never give up on your belief and never doubt it because if you do you will never be able to achieve what you want.

Be well-managed

Management is the key to many things- managing relationships, work, office and most of all self-managing is the key to being successful in life. Compartmentalise everything and be sure you can strike the right balance. Don't be swayed by anything.

Be a good team man

Believe it or not, you cannot swim through turbulent waters alone. You need people to pull an enterprise. Never forget good wishes and right kind of support from the staff can turn any venture into a success story. Lastly, never forget to share your success with everyone around. Give back to society what you gained from it!

Stay original : Shainika Dutt

Every person has a sense of style. Yet, there are only a few who'd attract a second glance or make heads turn. The magic could lie in tousled hair or it could lie in torn jeans! This week's face in the crowd, Shainika Dutt, NIIFT student, Mohali, believes everybody should have a style of their own, uninfluenced by anyone.

Your sense of style is…

I believe that you should never imitate. Whatever your style, it should be individualistic and original as is mine. I acquired it through hit and trial and after experimenting a lot.

Latest addition in the wardrobe…

A chiffon floral dress from UCB.

Brand freak or street smart?

Not at all a brand addict. If I like something from the flea market, I'll pick it up happily.

Choose one: Sporty, glamorous or chic

Glamorous, because I don't think I'm a very sporty person. You'd hardly see me in tee. I like dresses more.

Favourite style icon?

It has to be Sonam Kapoor from Bolywood. I also like Rihanna and Lady Gaga. They don't hesitate to experiment.

Who's the worst dressed celebrity around?

Vidya Balan. I think something is seriously wrong with her.

One fashion trend you don't understand…

A lot of youngsters these days try to fit into the punk look.

Your take on accessories

They should enhance what we wear. I prefer silver jewellery to gold.

One thing that boosts your confidence

Compliments.

Putting - Rhythm and speed control
Jesse Grewal

Grewal
(Grewal has coached several national champions and professionals apart from being coach of the Indian golf team for the Eisenhower Cup (World Cup) in 2008. He is currently Director, National Golf Academy of India and CGA Hero Honda Golf Academy. If you have any queries get in touch with him at parexcellence@tribunemail.com)

The difference between a 14 handicap golfer and an 18 and above handicap golfer is the number of three putts they make in a round. Golfers who three putt generally have poor rhythm and speed control.

From a distance on the green the right speed is more important than the right direction. With an incorrect line we can still putt within three feet of the hole on either side but with the wrong speed we could easily be 10 feet ahead or short of the hole. To be a good lag putter we have to reduce the work of the small muscles (wrists) and let the shoulders be the source of power. The length of the backswing controls the length of the putt.

To feel the role of the backswing take 5 balls. Putt the first one to a distance of around 10 feet. Then try to putt the next one to 20 feet only by increasing the length of the backswing. Putt the next 3 balls to 30, 40 and 50 feet only by increasing the length of the backswing each time. You can do this exercise by placing 5 tees on the green at 10, 20 , 30, 40 and 50 feet and making putts from the nearest to the next.

Do not make successive putts to the same hole. If you get one of the putts wrong begin from the 10 foot putt again. This will help you ingrain the feeling of the distance control up to 50 feet. We should be able to two putt within this range.

Tempo training - The time taken on the backswing and the downswing does not wary with the length of the putt. While analyzing putting on "The Sam Putt Lab' we find that if a player takes 0.6 seconds to make a backswing it would remain the same if he made a 10 foot putt or a 20 foot putt. The time taken from the top of the backswing to impact is approximately half of the time taken in the backswing and the total time of the forward swing (downswing and follow though) is also approximately the same as the backswing (only fractionally more). Take 5 balls and putt each one saying 'tick tock' loudly. Your backswing must begin and end with the word 'tick' and the forward swing with the word 'tock'. If you hit the ball before saying 'tock' your downswing is too fast. People with fast downswings have generally very slow backswings which forces them to accelerate the putter suddenly to create speed. Good smooth tempo and the correct length of the backswing help us putt it close on the long putts.

Another drill is to lay a shaft on the green 14 to 18 inches past the hole and try to make your putts roll up to the shaft and touch it lightly when the ball misses the hole. A well hit putt should roll 14 to 18 inches past a hole.

Putting downhill also helps us get more sensitive with the stroke. On an uphill putt if you hit it a little harder it would roll an additional 2-3 feet, while the same would roll 8-10 feet extra on a downhill putt. This makes us more sensitive to rhythm and speed.

Banish that tan
Anu Gogna

"Men shut their doors against a setting sun," said William Shakespeare. In the context of skin, women shut their doors against even the rising sun. The sun spares nothing, but one can't stop moving outdoors. It is time for both men and women to guard the skin from sun-tan. But before you buy a sun-screen, a brief lesson about what to spend money on might help.

How to choose the perfect sunscreen:

n Know your skin type first; dry or oily. A sun-screen widely depends on your skin type.

n If you have a dry skin type then SPF 20 to 30 does the work, and for oily skin SPF 30 to 40.

n Fair skin needs less SPF and if the skin complexion is dark SPF can be increased till 40. But one should not drastically start with SPF 40, they should start with SPF 25 and then increase slowly.

n Water-proof sunscreens are better for those who sweat a lot.

n For dry skin use a cream-based sunscreen and for oily skin use of gel based sunscreens is advised.

How to apply:

Before you apply the sun-screen lotion, make it a point that the skin is moistened evenly. So apply a moisturiser on dry skin and the oily skin can be moistened with a petroleum jelly based moisturiser.

n Apply the lotion at least 30 minutes before moving outdoor.

n Apply a good amount of lotion on all the body parts exposed to sun, not applying near the eyes.

n Wash your face and re-apply the lotion after every two hours.

Some myths

n No need of sun-screen on a cloudy day: "This is completely false", says Dr Bhavneet from Dr. Batra's Clinic. "After slight drizzle, the sun rays are rather refracted by the water droplets and affect the skin even more", she adds.

n Sunscreen is only applied for outdoor activities: "People sometimes complain of getting tanned even while remaining indoors. The lights we use inside the house sometimes affect the skin as well, so applying a sun-screen helps", says Dr Poonam from Tress Lounge-8.

Other than protecting the skin, lips too need to be sun-protected, so apply a lip gloss with adequate SPF. So how much are you going to protect yourself from sun, after all the roof will be repaired only when the sun is shinning!

Cycle of dresses

Prince William’s wife Kate Middleton may have splashed out on clothes for her new royal role, but the Duchess of Cambridge is said to have become adept at recycling her outfits.

The 29-year-old opted for an old coat for Duke of Edinburgh’s 90th birthday celebrations. In fact, she donned a blue brocade coat that she wore in 2009 for the wedding of her friend Nicolas van Cutsem to Alice Hadden-Paton.
However, she refreshed the outfit by teaming it with a pair of nude heels and a jaunty blue hat as she accompanied her husband, the Duke of Cambridge, to the service at Windsor Castle’s St George’s Chapel. But, this is not the first time for Kate, one of the world’s most-watched women.

She attended the wedding of close friend and jockey Sam Waley-Cohen and Annabel Ballin in the same fitted monochrome spotted dress she wore four years ago when leaving Boujis nightclub. She also wore the same black hat that she had donned earlier in the day to watch her husband take part in his first Trooping the Colour. — PTI

Be lazy be happy!

Heather GrahamHollywood actress Heather Graham and her boyfriend Jason Silva claim "lazy cuddling" to be a key to a happy relationship.

The 41-year-old and her television presenter boyfriend, love to take time out of their busy schedule to spend time together in New York and both admitted laziness is a positive factor in their relationship.

"I take her to eat Venezuelan food in the East Village. There's a great place called Caracas. We do a lot of lazy cuddling," Silva said. "Laziness, eating," added Graham.

The much-in-love couple believe to be perfect for each other as they are quite similar.

A still from the movie Kites
going global: A still from the movie Kites

With Bollywood swiftly mingling with Hollywood, many Hindi movies like My Name is Khan and Kites are being produced by international banners.

"The integration that is happening at the production and distribution level across Hollywood and Bollywood would help increase the cross-over learning for players on both sides and help the market grow.

"Earlier, Indian film distribution in the US used to be disorganised due to limited number of prints, inadequate marketing and lack of screens. 3 Idiots acted as game changer and penetration doubled with BIG Cinemas reaching out Indian films to south Asian audiences across US," Arjun said.

"Filmmakers have realised the potential of the US market and this has led to planned releases through focused marketing," he added.

Bollywood actors like Om Puri, Aishwarya Rai and Naseeruddin Shah have showcased their talent in Hollywood movies, drawing Indian audiences to cinemas.

"Superstar Hrithik Roshan visited Manhattan to promote Kites and similarly Akshay Kumar and Imran Khan visited our cinemas for promotion of Tees Maar Khan and Break Ke Baad respectively which helped," Arjun said.

BIG Cinemas has also partnered with IMAX Corporation to install a new world class digital projection system in IMAX theatre in Mumbai to screen 3D films.

"The 3D momentum has picked up significantly in India from the release of Avatar. IMAX 3D enhances the 3D viewing experience. In fact, Avatar is still playing at our IMAX 3D screen and continues to do well even after one and half year of release," said Arjun. — PTI

I can play even a man, says Shefali Shah

She has dabbled with theatre, television and done eye-catching character roles in many noted films, including Satya and Gandhi, My Father, but when the expressive Shefali Shah got to play a lead role in Kucch Luv Jaisaa it felt like she was debuting again.

"It's evidently completely opposite of what normally people do. I have reversed my career. I have always done what I have believed in and have stuck to my belief and conviction, which has not been conventional. Doing Kucch Luv Jaisaa was like a debut," Shefali said.

Shefali forayed into Bollywood with a very small role in Rangeela and then went on to do critically acclaimed films like Satya, Monsoon Wedding, 15 Park Avenue and Gandhi, My Father. However, acting was never on her wish list, it just happened! "My first brush with acting was when I was 10 years old. I did a play based on omen, about a child who was possessed. But I never thought that I would be an actor ," she said. — Agencies

Chatter Box
Thumbs down to child labour

There are people who don't feel guilty about making young children work. Even in the television industry, there are numerous child artists who work round the clock. We ask telly stars about the significance of Child Labour Day that's celebrated on June 12, how they feel about child labour, child stars and their hectic schedules.

Angad Hasija

It has good and bad points. Sometimes in certain shows, kids are needed in a show or film and they simply do a fantastic job and are loved by all. Kids emote themselves so well on the screen. It's amazing to watch them, but the kids get too much into acting and do not concentrate on education, which is a very crucial part in their life.

Aalesha

Personally I am against it, I don't like it when kids work, because I feel their childhood is snatched from them and they lose their innocence when they are acting continuously and miss on their school life and fun. Today so many kids are seen begging on the roads, and it isn't a good sight. The government should do something for them. Give them a chance to live their life with dignity.

Soumya Seth

Acting as a hobby in the childhood is good. But education is the primary need to focus on. After studies if someone wants to pursue it, then they should go ahead. I personally feel if the child can handle studies and acting together then they should go ahead and do what their heart tells them to do but also with full family support. As an Indian, we all should do our bit by not keeping child servants at our house and educating the street kids.

Ravi Dubey

Well, one should do what a heart tells them to, but personally parents who use their kids as a source of income is really pathetic. It's not something good. Because in the end they are kids and not grown ups who can handle this media and industry that easily. Kids are innocent and their innocence should not be neglected by making them do some TV show or ads and get them much into the limelight unless they are really gifted and inclined towards acting as a form of art.

Akshay Sethi

Akshay sethiIt's not right if kids are acting purely to fulfill parent's ambitions or only to make money. Education is a must. I think it's wrong if a child is forced to work by their families who depend on child's income. But if the child is working on his own and is treated like a family, then it is much better.

Yashashri Masurkar

I think children who study 20 hours a day and carry 10 kgs of books to school are real child labourers .Children who work in industry are working on their own terms and with no pressure. —HRM

You are influenced by Mercury and are inclined to work well with people and enjoy them. You are talented and versatile, very good at presenting ideas, and you are also very good at organisation and systematising. There will be more physical discomfort during August. There could be problems due to work related stress and blood disorders. Do exercise caution while travelling and driving. In the later half of the year only stomach related ailments could trouble you and health related expenses could increase. Father's health remains good but health of spouse and mother will need extra care.

ON THE FLOOR : JENnIFER LOPEZ

Genre: Club

On the Floor is a song by American recording artist and actress Jennifer Lopez, featuring fellow Latin-American rapper, Pitbull. It was released by Island Records, on February 11, 2011, as the lead single from Lopez's seventh studio album Love? The track is happening and make you foot tap any minute. You just can't afford to miss the rhythm of the track. Everything about this track is well put together, which makes it my favourite.
