Mumbai, June 11
A senior journalist with an English tabloid ‘Mid Day’, who extensively covered the underworld and crime for over two decades, was shot dead in broad daylight today by four unidentified bike-borne persons who pumped five bullets into his back in suburban Powai. Jyoti Dey (56), who was working as Editor (Special Investigation), was shot dead by unidentified persons in Powai at 3.30 pm, the police said.

According to the police, four persons on two bikes fired a number of rounds at Dey, who was also riding a bike, from behind. Following this, he was rushed to nearby Hiranandani hospital where he was declared dead, Patil said.

The shooters escaped from the spot after firing five rounds, the police said, adding further probe was on.

The 6-4 feet-tall journalist, who bench pressed 100 kg at the gym at one time as a hobby, had written two books, ‘Zero Dial’ and ‘Khallas’ on the underworld.

Meanwhile, more than seven hours after unknown men shot dead Dey, the police are fumbling for basic information. It is still not clear how many people were involved in the shooting. While some police officials say two men on a motorcycle shot Dey, others say there were four killers on two bikes with one pair opening fire on Dey's back while the other was shooting at his sides.
