Chandigarh, May 27
Haryana has already given 100 sq.yard plots to 3.55 lakh families free of cost under the Mahatma Gandhi Gramin Basti Yojna in 4,925 villages where suitable shamlat land was available .

Speaking at a meeting of the Committee of Secretaries on rural development here today, Chief Secretary Urvashi Gulati said the next step would be to ensure the construction of houses on these plots.

She said Haryana generated 83.83 lakh mandays during 2010-11 against the approved budget for 78.46 lakh mandays under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).

Gulati ordered that out of the total mandays, employment for at least 50 per cent should be provided to women under this ambitious scheme. She said norms and strategy for organisation of a village-based cadre of volunteers should be finalised to accelerate rural development.

Emphasising the need for developing skills according to the demand of industries, she said the Industrial Training Department should be made the nodal department to coordinate with industries and other departments for developing skills. The meeting was informed that 58,545 BPL ration cards had been issued to brick-kiln labourers as on March 22. Similarly, 16,488 ration cards were issued to homeless and shelterless people as on March 15.
