Yet another Haryanvi on top of the world

Kathmandu, May 21
A day after Sushma and Vikas Kaushik from Haryana became the world’s youngest couple, and India’s first, to climb Mount Everest, yet another Indian woman, Flight Lieutenant Nivedita Chaudhary from the Indian Air Force, accompanied by a Haryanvi, reached the world’s highest peak on Saturday.

Significantly, several other Indian women too, part of the eco-Himalayan expedition, have managed to accomplish the daring feat this month. Among them are two young women from the North-East and Premlata Agarwal from Jamshedpur ( Jharkhand). Agarwal, a mother of two, is the oldest Indian woman and the first from the Marwari community to have climbed the peak. More women, part of the Indian Air Force team, are likely to attempt the daunting task as and when weather permits.

Flight Lieutenant Chaudhary from Rajasthan is presently posted at Agra. Sushma Kaushik is a police woman posted at Panipat while her husband, Vikas, is a student of M.Sc. Another climber from Haryana to scale the peak on Saturday was Corporal Raju Sindhu, who accompanied Chaudhary in the final push.

Nivedita Chaudhary, who is part of an 11-member all-women IAF expedition, reached the summit at around 9 am after a gruelling four-hour climb along with her co-climber Corporal Raju Sindhu (26) from Haryana.

The two were accompanied by two Sherpa guides to the summit, according to Durga Bhandari, manager of the Nepal office of Rimo Expeditions that arranged the expedition.

Reports said more IAF women climbers and their male compatriots are preparing to launch more summit bids in the coming days. The team, which is accompanied by a doctor and eight male support climbers, is led by Group Captain Narendra Kumar Dahiya. All women climbers in the IAF team are first timers to the Everest.

The first Indian woman to climb Mt Everest, Bachendri Pal, currently leading a group of people from corporate houses for an outdoor camp in Uttarkashi, said that the women and specially Premlata had proved that age was no bar for people willing to take up adventure sports. — PTI
