Mamata sets ball rolling to return Singur land 
But Land Acquisition Act doesn’t allow return of acquired land
Kolkata, May 21
In one of her first acts after assuming the office of the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee set in motion a process to return 400 acres of land at Singur to farmers. The Left Front government had acquired 1,000 acres of land for Tata Motors to set up an automobile plant, which was then opposed by Mamata on the plea that farmers were forced to give up their land for a pittance.

Giving a boost to its communication and TV broadcast services, India today successfully launched its advanced GSAT-8 satellite on board Arianespace rocket from Kourou in French Guiana.

Over 40 killed in dust storms in UP
Lucknow, May 21
More than 40 people were today killed and several others injured as dust storms, accompanied by high velocity wind and rains, hit several districts of Uttar Pradesh. A stationary coach of a passenger train also got derailed at Shahjahanpur railway station after it was dragged on the track for several metres by high velocity winds.

CBI books AP cops 
Hyderabad, May 21
In a major setback to Andhra Pradesh police, the CBI has registered a criminal case against the state police officials over the alleged fake encounter killing of top Maoist leader Azad alias Cherukuri Rajkumar and freelance journalist Hemchandra Pandey in July last year. The case was registered following directions from the Supreme Court that heard petitions from social activist Swami Agnivesh and Pandey’s wife Bineeta Pandey.

16 killed in NATO fuel tanker blast in Pak
Landikotal (Pak), May 21
 At least 16 persons were killed in northwest Pakistan today after a bomb attack claimed by a militant group hit a truck carrying fuel supplies for NATO forces in Afghanistan. It took place near the Torkham border crossing in the Khyber region, the main route for moving supplies to NATO and American forces in Afghanistan. (Details on World page)

Lightning kills 5, hailstorm adds to farmers’ woes

 Untimely rains, hailstorm and squall, which lashed Bathinda, Muktsar and Abohar regions late evening today left a trail of destruction. As many as five persons died after lightning struck him. (Details on Punjab page)
