Petrol punch after polls

A day after the verdict on five key state Assemblies was pronounced, the state-owned oil companies today hiked petrol prices by around Rs 5 per litre with effect from midnight tonight. There have been nine hikes since last June when petrol was deregulated.

The state Assembly elections, results of which were declared on Friday, may have thrown up two more women as chief ministers, but not too many women have been elected to the Legislative Assemblies of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. The number has actually declined in Tamil Nadu since 2006.

Post-win, Jagan dares Congress to snap poll
Hyderabad, May 14
After the massive victory in the Lok Sabha byelection, YSR Congress president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy today challenged the ruling Congress to order snap polls to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly and claimed that his party would sweep the elections.

Opposition ups ante, Guv in Delhi, but K’taka govt ‘safe’

While Karnataka Governor HR Bhardwaj has come rushing to Delhi to seek Central approval to proceed against Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, there appeared no immediate threat to the first BJP government in the South, even after the Supreme Court yesterday, in its ruling, set aside the disqualification of 16 MLAs, who had raised the banner of revolt against the CM.

Even as Karnataka Governor HR Bharadwaj today stated that his position had been vindicated by yesterday’s Supreme Court order disqualifying rebel BJP legislators, the Congress leadership appeared to be in no mood to act against the BS Yeddyurappa Government for fear of an adverse political reaction.

Cong, JDS want Karnataka government dismissed
Bangalore/New Delhi, May 14
The Congress and the JDS in Karnataka on Saturday upped the ante demanding dismissal of the BS Yeddyurappa government on the grounds that it has lost majority following the Supreme Court setting aside the disqualification of 11 BJP rebel MLAs and  five Independents. Also, in what could be seen as more trouble ahead for the state government, Governor HR Bhardwaj appeared to suggest a trial of strength for the BJP government in the wake of the fresh apex court order.

Revamp PDS, apex court tells govt
New Delhi, May 14
Expressing concern over widespread prevalence of starvation deaths and malnutrition, the Supreme Court today issued a series of directives to the Centre and state governments to revamp the Public Distribution System (PDS) and ensure foodgrains allocated under the scheme reach the poor. A Bench comprising Justices Dalveer Bhandari and Deepak Verma passed a detailed order at a special sitting after hearing a PIL that sought measures for checking rampant corruption in the PDS.

India to give technical data to Pak
New Delhi, May 14
In what is seen as a positive development in the talks between the two countries, India has agreed to forward ‘comprehensive technical data’ on the Tulbul Navigation Project/Wullar Barrage to Pakistan so that the two neighbours could find a solution to the 25-year-old dispute under the provision of the Indus Waters Treaty.
