2nd CBI chargesheet may name Karunanidhi’s daughter, wife
To focus on links between Balwa’s firm & DMK’s Kalaignar TV

New Delhi, April 24
The CBI is likely to file its second chargesheet tomorrow in the 2G Spectrum allocation scam, and, this time, with the names of some more corporate honchos and top politicians. The talk is that the name of DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s daughter and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi may figure in the list of accused after investigations in the case disclosed the circuitous trail of the money from DB Realty to DMK family-owned Kalaignar TV.

Kanimozhi, Karunanidhi’s wife Dayaluammal and Sharad Kumar, Kalaignar TV MD, own 20, 60 and 20 per cent shares, respectively, in the family-run channel. All eyes are now on whether the names of daughter and wife of the chief of UPA’s key southern ally will figure in the list.

While sources say no final decision has been taken regarding Dayaluammal, but the chargesheet is expected to focus on a transaction between companies linked to promoters of DB Realty and Kalaignar TV, which is where Kanimozhi and her stepmother come in. The chargesheet is also expected to throw light on the role of former Telecom Minister A Raja’s close aide Sadiq Batcha, who died under mysterious circumstances last month.

Expectedly, the names of Tamil Nadu CM M Karunanidhi’s closest relatives in the chargesheet may deliver yet another crushing blow to the fragile Congress-DMK relationship, which is yet to recover
from the setback it received when top DMK leader A Raja was sent to jail for conceiving and executing the 2G scam.

Both the Congress and the DMK have denied rift in the relationship due to investigation into the scam. Campaigning during the recently held elections, Congress president Sonia Gandhi even held a joint rally with Karunanidhi. However, memories of the two parties bitterly bickering during seat-sharing negotiations following the Raja episode continue to be fresh in mind.

While speculations of DMK ministers in the UPA government being on a standby to tender resignations if Kanimozhi and her stepmother’s names figured in the chargesheet are doing rounds, political observers feel Karunanidhi may wait till results of the Assembly election are announced before making any politically drastic move. Although the blow would be severer this time, Karunanidhi, who is hoping to be re-elected as the CM, would be loath to upset the applecart at this point in time, they say.

The Congress is, meanwhile, monitoring the situation and hoping that the threat of resignations turn out to be a pressure tactic only. Party sources, however, say it will not be easy for the DMK to walk out of the alliance, given the politically precarious situation that it was in.

The CBI had earlier told the court that Rs 200 crore connected with the 2G scam had travelled from a partnership firm of Swan Telecom Promoter Shahid Usman Balwa to Kalaignar TV.

The investigating agency said the money travelled through a “circuitous route” through Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Private Limited, a DB group company, and Cineyug Films Private Limited. As many as nine persons may be accused of perpetrating various crimes under the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act. Besides Kalaignar TV stakeholders, others likely to be named as accused in the case are promoters of DB Realty, Shahid Balwa and Vinod Goenka, Karim Morani of Cineyug Films and Asif Balwa and Rajiv B Agarwal of Kusegaon Realty, besides A Raja.
