now, brand SUNNY Sunny Deol has changed…what? You mean he is taking dancing lessons from Hrithik Roshan or has the configuration for the dhai kilo ka haath changed? Well, well, you haven't got any closer to the clue. We get it straight, the self-absorbed, whiny actor has decided to break open the shell of 'let my work speak' and opted for a ride to destination 'marketing'.
Better late than never, the Deol clan and especially our very own Sunny Deol has woken up to the simple fact that until you shout from the rooftop, you wouldn't be heard. In plain and simple words, sell yourself to survive. In Chandigarh for a brief stopover, we catch up with the actor who tells us how the realisation came about and what next. I thought what was lacking in my films and me … The answer was simple and right there, they weren't being marketed well. My movie Right Ya Wrong suffered because of it. This made me think what was lacking in the movies and I realised I just had to promote them well. I shouldn't hold myself back if I have done some good work, might as well talk about it and spread the word. I made up for it in Yamla Pagla Deewana and I am going to do this with the rest of my films. Shah Rukh Khan started the trend of marketing… I saw every actor had taken after Shah Rukh Khan, the actor who introduced the self-marketing trend in the industry. He has marketed himself, now he doesn't know what to do. I guess he has competition now! (Laughs) Watch out for Ghayal 2 and some of the other sequels… I thought I hadn't done action for a long time, something my fans love to see me doing. So, now I am coming back with fresh dose of action. Ghayal 2 would be different from the original, but we would definitely pick it from where we left. We would soon be coming with a sequel to YPD. You would see the three Deols, we still haven't decided on the rest. I have found my director, just hope he doesn't run away… Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi of Pinjar fame is a fabulous director, but he hasn't been encouraged much. I am glad we are working together on the much-awaited movie Mohalla Assi, where I play a Sanskrit scholar. Based on the Hindi novel Kashi Ka Assi penned by Dr Kashinath Singh, it is about a mohalla in Varanasi on the banks of the river Ganga. Dr Chandraprakash is going to be on board with us for long, hope he sticks with us. (Laughs — surprising he does that more often now) We have a handful of good directors and scriptwriters… I have always maintained that it's a good script that gives an image to the actor. Ghayal, Arjun are still remembered for their dialogues and powerful scripts. Today, we have only a handful of directors who are experimenting with scripts. IPL is like a commercial film; I like games that get over fast… I am not a cricket fan. In fact, after a long time I saw three matches of the World Cup, India vs Australia, India vs Pakistan and the final match because for the first time I saw that the team was playing as 'one team.' I am game for sports that get over fast, like football. We also need to promote sports in Punjab, if we want the youth to come out of drug-addiction. Three more years for the launch of my son Karan Singh Deol... Our whole family is into acting; my kids would take to it as well. Karan, 20, has three more years before I launch him under our home production — Vijayta Films. Through my kids, I can understand my father better now… I have a different equation with my kids; they are given a 'little' leverage, which we were not. I can discuss with them various things, like if they are seeing a girl or what they want to do. Today, I can understand my father better. He is a friend now. Bobby on the other hand had a more casual relationship with our father because he knows how to find his way by talking things on a lighter note with him! Jaanbaaz, ZEE TV reality show is next and a romantic date… I am doing a reality show with Zee TV Janbaaz on the lives of stuntmen and women. You will see me in a romantic role opposite Kangana Ranaut in I Love New Year. |
Success Mantra
Risk-taking ability coupled with passion for teaching has helped Madhu Chitkara create her own brand in the field of education. She started her career as a school teacher and has gone on to create an educational conglomerate
'Chitkara'.
Her personal and professional life is worth emulating. She found her true-life partner in Ashok Chitkara in 1977. Without any resources to support them, just by their sheer ability they managed to create an empire. Madhu has an insatiable desire to grow; from being a school teacher, she armed herself with an M.Sc, M.Ed and Ph.D, all while adding to her family. From an Institute of Education to School of Engineering and Technology, School of Pharmacy, School of Hospitality, School of Architecture, College of Education, International School, the Chitkara Educational Trust today has two universities — one in Himachal Pradesh and the other in Punjab. She shares excerpts from her challenging journey. Risk-taking ability Opportunity knocks once, if you don't take the risk, you wouldn't be able to transform it into success. World history shows that only those who took up challenges became successful. If you want to grow, be prepared to tread the unknown path but ensure that you have done your homework well. Innovativeness Fortune favours the brave. Be prepared to persevere and look out for new opportunities. Ensure that you put in your best effort in every venture. There is no dearth of competition; one needs to be different to win the race. There is an educational institute at every nook and corner. To be different from the rest, we introduced project-based learning for our students and grooming modules for our teachers. And today, we are as much proud of them as they are of being associated with us. Motivation Have a positive attitude and motivate your colleagues to put in that extra bit to achieve the goal. It's not only self-motivication that's required; one also needs to keep the team motivated to reach desired goals. Determination Always have a 'can do' attitude. Remember, no one has ever died of hardwork! Focus takes you places. If one is determined, it sends a strong message to the world. People respect and contribute to it. Social responsibility Be prepared to give to the society, which has served you so well. There is no happiness alone; it must spread outwards from the family to the society. Not only do we care about the wards of construction workers, but are also helping two villages become self-sustainable. Extend a hand and it will come back to you where you least expect it. |
NOTES from the heart
Facing fierce lights, audiences and sound systems when the world gets ready to sleep…the life of performers is no cakewalk. But when Salil Bhatt, the 10th generation of the famous Bhatt lineage, opens up the conversation with — 'I have grown up the tough way', one ponders.
In Chandigarh to perform at the Panjab Kala Bhavan on Monday, Bhatt shares what life has been like. "My home is dangerously full of talented musicians, each practicing with open doors," shares Bhatt, whose uncles and aunts are proponents of sitar, guitar, tabla and more. With father and mentor Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, the legendary musician with a Grammy Award to his credit, Bhatt charted his own destiny. Despite being immersed in a musical heritage, Bhatt's first choice had not been being a musician. He was more fascinated by his cousin Namrata Bhatt, one of the first women to fly an aircraft in India. "I was a mere child when she would take me to the tarmac as she practiced. I would be filled with wonder and awe as she took off," shares Bhatt. Fiercely independent, Salil contemplated a career not only in flying but also management and armed forces before he settled down with music. "I had seen Panditji flying off to different destinations to perform. Every time I would go to see him off, I had the feeling of being left back. Choosing his field, I am glad when I see him in transits now," shares Bhatt. "My taalim has more been on airport lounges than at home, as Panditji's commitments took him around the world. Still I look forward to being seated next to him on a long flight. The training I receive in those 10 hours is absolutely amazing," shares Bhatt. Being a musician is not an easy job. "In my own home I passed through many challenges posed by talented artistes, which prepared me to face the world. But a performer's life belongs to his or her audience, even if you are going through hell you should be able to provide that joy to the audience," he says. Nomination for Juno Award (called Canadian Grammy) and an SUV that resembles the sports car of Nicholas Cage in the movie Ghost Rider has given him joy lately. Solo concerts, international collaborations, awards and accolades to his credit already, what is Bhatt eyeing next. "Well, my fathers's Grammy has been sitting pretty at home for last 17 years without much company. Another Grammy to give her company, bus itna sa khwab hai (is all I dream)," he signs off. |

IPL fever in Tellyworld
The World Cup may have ended but this does not mean the end of the cricket mania. With the Indian Premier League, our telly stars are gearing up for it. Read on as they speak about their favourite teams and players. Hiten Tejwani I am looking forward for the IPL 4 and this IPL will be interesting to watch as there are two new teams playing. I will be supporting two teams Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders. I am cheering for all teams. Manish Raisinghani I love cricket and will try my best to catch up with the IPL matches. I have one request to make to everyone in India. I know that all of you will be busy watching IPL, but in the process please do not forget about Anna Hazare's campaign against corruption. My favourite team is Mumbai Indians but I will also be supporting some other teams that have my favourite cricketers. My favourite players are MS Dhoni, Yusuf Pathan and Gautam Gambhir. Madhura Naik I am very excited about the match to be played by my favourite team Kolkata Knight Riders. No particular players, I love the whole of Shah Rukh Khan's team. Reshmi Ghosh I have to admit that this World Cup was the first time that I watched cricket matches from start to end. It was the most interesting World Cup ever. I am now looking forward to the IPL. I will cheer for both Kolkata Knight Riders as well as Mumbai Indians. I have started liking MS Dhoni since this World Cup and am now looking forward to see how he performs in IPL. Karan Tacker I couldn't follow the World Cup due to my shooting schedule but will try to follow IPL, even though I know it's going to be difficult. I am also planning to attend the matches that are being held in Mumbai. Let's see if that is possible. I am a little confused. I endorse Nivea, which has tied up with the Chennai Super Kings but being a Mumbaikar, I also support Mumbai Indians. I like MS Dhoni, from Chennai Superkings and Sachin Tendulkar, from Mumbai Indians. I am also looking forward to see Yuvraj Singh play after all he won the Man of the series in the World Cup. Vivan Bhatena The IPL has a lot of exciting games in store and I am also looking forward to see how the Pune team, who are making their IPL debut, performs. It is difficult to choose but I think the Mumbai Indians are favourites this time. Sachin Tendulkar is my all time favourite player. Ravi Dubey I was never a cricket fan but since the India-Pakistan and India-Sri Lanka match during the World Cup, I am hooked to the game. I will definitely watch the IPL. I will be supporting Mumbai Indians. It may sound clichéd but I believe that Sachin Tendulkar is the best. Aishwarya Sakuja I will definitely catch the matches whenever I get the time. I am even planning to watch the matches that are held in Mumbai in the stadium. I may have to lie to the producers that I am unwell but I will be dead if I get caught (laughs). But yes I do plan to take an off and watch some matches in the stadium. I am an army kid who has travelled all over India, so there is no particular place I am attached to. If I have to choose, then it's Mumbai Indians because the city has been extremely kind to Delhi Darevdevils and me because my dad stays in Delhi. Sachin Tendulkar is my favourite because he is an inspiration and MS Dhoni too. — HRM |
Par Excellence
The moment of truth in a golf swing is ‘impact’. All great golfers have learnt how to create perfect impact and built their swings on certain individual preferences without compromising the fundamentals or principles of golf. Impact is dependent on numerous principles, including your grip, set-up and backswing.
If we are reasonably correct with the above-mentioned principles, we are now in a good position to create good impact. But we still may not do so. On the downswing most players irrespective of their proficiency are at a similar position when the club shaft is parallel to the ground or waist high. The clubface is relatively open and the back of the left hand is facing in front of the player. The difference between good and poor ball-strikers happens from here. Majority of the poor ball-strikers are unable to 'release' the club or close the face of the club. Only if the club is closing or releasing after impact can it be square at impact. To be square, the back of your left hand must point towards the target at impact. To allow the club to release, the left arm softens at the elbow and the upper arm remains connected to the chest. Many golfers have the wrong notion that the left arm must be rigid and straight throughout the swing. This was taught to a lot of people and that's why there are so many slicers. If the left arm remains rigid it becomes disconnected from the body and does not allow the clubface to close and therefore leads to poor impact. Place a small towel or the wood head cover under your left armpit and make some swings without dropping the object under your arm. You will notice the left arm folding on the follow through and the right arm rolling over and closing the clubface. Hit some shots with the ball placed on a tee and you will feel the club closing and you may begin to hook a few balls. Once a player has the ability to close the face of the club and hit hooks, can he start turning or moving the body faster so as to stop the ball-hooking. A common piece of advice given to all is to turn the hips faster in the downswing. This move is disastrous for a slicer and good advice only to players who fight the hook. A player who has the closing action of the clubface on the downswing coupled with the turning of the body will create a lot of power and will hit the ball a lot further. This closing action will stop the slice. The starting direction of the ball is influenced by the 'path' of the club. This path is called the swing plane and this can differ from person to person. We must create a repeatable plane so as to have a repeatable and not necessarily a perfect ball fight. This is the next step. |
Deal with stress on the job
Renee Singh Work Place stress is one of the biggest sources of stress in today's world. More than 32 per cent of our population accepts that workplace stress is the major stress in their lives. Much beyond an office situation stress from the job affects personal and professional relationships. In fact work related stress is one of the major culprits of heart disease. Over loaded and swamped with work, we have all been there. Feeling dumped under papers and completely overwhelmed is what sometimes we do with ourselves. Figureout what stresses you n
Keep a journal for a week and record all the events that have bothered you. n
Make a note of the people who led to the stress in you. n
Right down how each situation has made you feel. Review your journal after several days. See your own response to the situation. n
Is it a deadline situation that gets you OR n
Is it a colleagues response to your behavior OR n
Is it your bosses response to you that bothers you Find yourself a strategy to combat all these stressors. Ask for help It might seem awkward at first to ask your boss or colleague about your stressful state but if it keeps you from making costly errors please ask for help. People respect you more when you make your stress known. Take breaks Take a short 15-minute break away from your desk, clear your brain, refresh your inner self a few long deep breaths near the window and then come back refreshed. Coffee or teatime Caffeine is not a very healthy option but works during various emergency stress situations. (Singh is a Chandigarh-based psychotherapist) Re-charge your batteries Take charge of your schedule Priorities your daily, weekly work and delegate appropriately. Being in control means less stress for you. Set limits for commitments Constant demands on you in terms or oganising and planning are a definite stressor so limit these behaviours. Relaxation techniques Such as meditation, yoga, stretching and massage. These always help in keeping stress levels at bay and help in rejuvenating the mind as well as the body so that we not only manage to de-stress but also lead a stress free life. A balanced mind body schedule is what we need to keep our selves nurtured and feasibly fit. |
Calorie count on iPhone
Worried about how many calories you are going to consume in that slice of pizza, chocolate cake or bag of fries? A new iPhone application may help. After taking a picture of the meal with the phone, the app gives a calorie read-out almost instantly. The app, called MealSnap, was developed by DailyBurn, a fitness social network that has created several other fitness and diet-related iPhone applications.
Within minutes of taking a picture of a meal and matching it to a database of some 500,000 food items, the app sends users an alert with a range of calories for the meal that was photographed. "The database can quickly help identity the food, how many calories there are, proteins, fat, carbs, vitamins, whatever you may want to know," said DailyBurn CEO Andy Smith. "Users can then choose to share what they've eaten on Twitter or FourSquare, leading to social accountability." Smith added that calorie counting can be a very time consuming process. But the app makes it easier to track the calories in food. "The pure act of tracking something can cause a psychological change that can help people on their health and fitness journey," he explained. "Just the simple fact of logging it makes me more aware of what I'm eating." Additionally, MealSnap can serve as a food diary, allowing users to keep a visual log of the meals they have eaten. "It's like a food journal, but easier. All you do is take the picture," Smith said. — Reuters |
Liven up a child’s playroom
Sukhmani
Give your child a place to play and at the same time keep the rest of your house tidy by planning a playroom. Here are a few simple ways in which you can create a perfect haven for your kids to enjoy with their friends.
n Your children's playroom should reflect their personality and taste, so use colours and themes that they like. n
Before setting a theme, keep in mind your child's gender and age. If both a boy and a girl are using the room, go for neutral themes like a jungle theme or an animal farm theme. n
Baby proof the room. Avoid sharp corners and make sure there are no electrical points within their reach. n
Kids love colour. Decorate the room in bright colours. n
Choose the flooring wisely. A rubber floor is an ideal option. You can divide zones with wipe clean flooring for messy play and a soft floor covering for reading and relaxing. If you are using rugs, make sure they are washable. n
Use Easy to clean furnishings. n If you have ABC or 123 on the walls, make sure they are at the child's eye level. n
Keep toys and books within reach of the child. n
Use a lot of storage bins in different colours for toys. Label them and encourage your child to place different types of toys in their proper bins. n
A chalk-board in the room is a must. n For painting, reading art and craft or homework, you will need a table and chairs. You can go for bright laminate furniture and beanbags. Make sure you buy versatile pieces of furniture, since children grow fast, your furniture should at least last them a couple of years. n
Hang your kid's photos and their paintings to personalise their space. n
Arrange the furniture in such a way that it leaves enough free space for the child to move around. (Sukhmani is a Chandigarh based interior and landscape designer) |
Obese kids prone to bone fractures A new study has revealed that obese children are vulnerable to bone fractures and more likely to develop osteoporosis in old age. Overweight children develop bigger skeletons in order to carry their extra weight. The Medical Research Council (MRC) study involving 499 healthy six-year-old children found their bigger bones have five to six percent lower bone density, because they lack enough minerals to make them strong. It suggested childhood obesity will increase the risk of osteoporosis, and debilitating hip and back fractures in old age, as 90 per cent of bone mass is acquired in childhood, directly affecting how strong the bones are in later life. The children are part of a much larger cohort being studied by MRC scientists at the Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit in Southampton, in an attempt to understand how lifestyle, diet and other environmental factors in pregnancy and childhood influence diseases of ageing, such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Zoe Cole, rheumatologist and researcher, said the findings made tackling childhood obesity even more urgent as the costs of osteoporosis are unaffordable. The study will be presented at the British Society for Rheumatology conference this week. — ANI |

Lady Gaga upsets Catholic campaigners Popstar Lady Gaga has come under fire from Catholic campaigners for her controversial use of religious imagery in her videos.
The 25-year-old singer, who takes on the Bible in her new song 'Judas', is facing accusations of using shock tactics and Christian idolatry to advance her career. The 'Born This Way' hitmaker portrays Mary Magdalene and actor Norman Reedus stars as Judas in the new video. With the promo due to release later this month, the singer has invited outrage from bosses at the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights. "This is a stunt. Lady Gaga tries to continue to shock Catholics and Christians in general. She dresses as a nun, she swallows the rosary. She has now morphed into a caricature of herself." "She is trying to rip off Christian idolatry to shore up her talentless, mundane and boring performances. Another ex-Catholic whose head is turned around. Is this the only way to jet up her performance? This isn't random, we are getting closer to Holy Week and Easter," said Bill Donohue, president of the organisation. — PTI |
