DoT slaps 8 termination notices on telecom firms 
New Delhi, April 11
It could soon be the end of the road for some of the start-up telecom companies, which failed to meet the initial roll-out obligations after getting licences for starting the services on first-come-first-served basis in 2008. The government has decided to dispatch 17 notices to various telecom firms. While eight termination notices have already been sent, the DoT is in the process of dispatching the remaining nine notices as well.

Wanting to de-link the process of granting a licence in the telecom sector from the allocation of Spectrum, the government today said all licences were proposed to be renewed after 10 years instead of 20 years.

Breather for 44 deemed varsities
New Delhi, April 11
The Supreme Court today granted the government an additional 10 weeks to submit a fresh report on the academic standards of 44 Deemed Universities that had been threatened with de-recognition for “poor” quality education. It, however, allowed the institutions to enjoy their deemed status till July19, which means they would be in a position to go ahead with admissions for the 2011-12 session that starts in June.

Assam records 70% voting in final phase
Guwahati, April 11
Over 70 per cent registered voters cast their votes in the second and final phase of Assembly elections in the state today. The polling, in 64 constituencies spread over 14 districts, went off peacefully, barring a few stray incidents of violence. In all, 340 companies of paramilitary personnel were deployed on election duty.

Recovery of woman’s body in parcel baffles police Parents of a girl missing from Jalandhar fear it  could be their daughter, seek DNA test  Ajmer/Jalandhar, April 11 The murder of a young woman, whose body was put in a large parcel box dispatched from Delhi to Ajmer, has left the police of two states baffled. The parcel was sent through a transport firm and was found by workers of the company on April 8 in their Madanganj- Kishangarh (Ajmer) office after a foul smell started emanating from it.
