ULFA calls off bandh as PM puts off visit
Bijay Sankar Bora/TNS

Guwahati, March 27
The anti-talks faction of the banned ULFA led by fugitive “commander in chief” Paresh Barua today called off its 12-hour Assam Bandh tomorrow in view of the rescheduling of the visit of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to the poll-bound state to hit the campaign trail.

The publicity in charge of the outfit Arunodoy Dahotia in an e-mail said the bandh had been called off as Prime Minister was not coming to the state tomorrow.

The outfit, however, stated that the bandh would be called for whenever the Prime Minister or any other representative of the Indian government visits the state in the future.

The outfit had called for the bandh in protest against the proposed visit of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh saying, “The Prime Minister who had promised to hold discussion on all the core issues in the interest of resolving the “Assam-India” conflict, has betrayed the people of Assam by creating rift in the ULFA so that the “Indian colonial occupation could be continued in Assam”.
