Law of Attraction
Why beauties prefer geeks for a life partner? Because no beauty is without brain and no geek is all that boring
Ashima Sehajpal

It isn't a dreamland where geeks have got the looks and their dressing sense is immaculate. Don't go by the measures of the hit TV show, Beauty and the Geek. For in reality, (which often the reality shows doesn't show) beauties have been blessed with brains and stylish geeks have no hang ups with socialising. While the Indian version of Beauty and the Geek will soon go on air on Channel V, we make an attempt to know if the contrasting combination of beauty and the geek really exists. And, if it does exist, what makes them tick? Read on…

Neetu Narula and Dr Manipal Singh Narula

About them: Neetu was one of the finalists of Mrs India contest last year. Manipal is an orthopaedic surgeon at a city hospital.

Beauty: When I participated in the Mrs India contest last year, my husband supported me completely. Compatibility is not an issue when intellectually you complement each other. He doesn't mind when I advise him on his dressing sense just as I don't when he tells me how to deal with the people around. We share our knowledge on different subjects and that makes us an interesting couple.

Geek: In a long-term relationship, looks take a back seat. You then don't need an arm candy but a life partner who would understand you. I look at the positives of our differences. For example, since she is blessed with beauty, I try to match up to her by keeping myself in shape. Understanding doesn't come from the professions a couple pursue but on how maturely you deal with difficult situations in life. Serious relationships never depend on looks.

Conventional concept of geek

n A computer expert or enthusiast, a peculiar or otherwise dislikeable person, especially one who is perceived to be overtly intellectual. A boring and unattractive social misfit.

Understanding the terms in the present day context

n Rajesh Gill, a city-based sociologist says that meaning of both terms has changed dramatically. "Are beautiful girls computer illiterates? Don't gadget-freak boys socialise on networking sites? These extreme concepts cease to exist now."

n For the same reason, she says compatibility between a couple can't be ascribed to their qualities or shortcomings. "No geek is boring and no beauty is a dud. If the couple with opposite attributes doesn't get along well, then there are other factors like the basic nature, likings and disliking that play a role." She adds that the fact that girls go for intelligent boys shows geeks are in demand and at same time, beauty is complemented with brains.

Couple of cases

Karishma Randeva and Kenwal MookheyKarishma Randeva and Kenwal Mookhey
About them: Karishma is a TV actor. Her claim to fame was her show, Hello Dolly, in which she played the title role of Dolly. Kenwal is an ethical software hacker.

Beauty: It would have been so boring if we were from the same profession. Many real life couples from the TV industry are my friends and all they have to talk about is television. We have different friend circles, which means we have any day more friends than a husband and wife from the same profession would have. It's refreshing to hang out with his friends and talk about things that are not related to television.

Geek: We are quite an interesting combination-- a TV actor and an ethical hacker. In fact, that makes us different from other couples, who are from not as different professions as us. All the time, we have so many stories to share. The beauty and the geek combination is no more boring, it's unusual and
interesting.

Living life Queen(ie) size
Ashima Sehajpal

A socialite hating to be called so may be surprising, at times even amusing or plain silly. So, when someone from the same world overtly accepts being the most visible person on the party circuit of a city, we appreciate the candidness. Queenie Dhody enjoys being a socialite, that too a celebrated one.

"I don't find anything derogatory with the term. People need to understand that if we party, it does not mean we don't work," says Queenie. A well-known jewellery designer, she was in the city on Monday to launch her collection at Samsaara-Taj. She gives us an insight into her personal and professional life.

Live life to the fullest

The fact that she is a public figure or is perceived of as a party freak doesn't bother Queenie much. "I have gone through a lot in my life. But I never forget that there's just one life, which shouldn't be lived as per the norms set by others."

She believes that people are fickle-minded and it is difficult to comply with the rules set by them. Ask her about how she feels about the prying eyes around her, "My hands are full and I do not have the time to bother about those who do not matter." Also, she adds that her kids, aged 16 and 12, are her priority.

Rock-solid affair

Emeralds dominate her collection on display at Samsaara. She says if there is any replacement for diamonds, it has to be emeralds.

"Women have become more experimental. They want to add to their diamond collection and next come emeralds."

She says women in India and abroad, want to wear jewellery that's visible. "Nobody wants to spend money on minimalist jewellery anymore. The trend is for big beautiful pieces in coloured stones."

Makeover mantra

Queenie has recently been roped in to give a makeover to the Miss India contestants. She adds, "The X-factor would make the next Miss India stand out among the most beautiful women."

She is also looking forward to open up a full-time makeover firm.

Besides designing jewellery, she also plans to launch a wedding planner firm. "The wedding industry is minting big bucks but the only problem is that it is not organised."

Her fitness formula

Dressed in a dark purple frilly, well-fitted top with a blue colour short skirt, Queenie looked gorgeous and fit as always. Sharing her fitness secret she says, "I am a regular with power yoga. I believe that if you are fit from inside, it would show on your face. And most important thing is to live life on your own terms." Her radiant skin is proof enough.

Make way for colours
The little black dress and black heels have been pushed to the back of the wardrobe. Vibrant shoes and bright dresses are taking precedence over them. We take a look at beauties, who have worn dresses in solid shades.

Priyanka ChopraWe are happy that the dusky beauty is indulging in colour therapy and the peach hue looks fabulous on her. However, she cannot get over showing off her legs. The draped dress is too complicated and pageant-y. The silver sandals (something space-costume-like about them) are too strong for the delicate and feminine dress. She should stick to the colour but choose a better dress next time.

Priyanka Chopra

Eesha Koppikhar NarangThe zipper on the plain dress is unflattering and ruins the attempt at creating a formal look. The little bag is very auntie-type and does not suit her vivacious personality.

Amisha PatelThe cyan dress and shoes look lovely on her. The gold clutch complements her gold chain detail. It is simple and sexy And the watch is indeed classy.

Rani MukerjiThe Bengali bombshell goes the risque route with this striking red Donna Karan dress. She carries off the drape dress beautifully and jazzes it up with a golden chain. We love the loose, wavy hair and smoky eye make-up.

Rani Mukerji

Neha DhupiaHow lovely does she look! We love the lime green hue and the rich and luscious drapes. She carries off the structured dress beautifully and bronze peep-toes complete her look.

Mahesh was last seen playing the negative Jaywant in Pavitra Rishta. The two love birds met while shooting Ghar Ek Sapna and soon fell in love. They are thinking marriage too.

Jodi falls ill

Sara Khan aka Mona of Zee TV's Preet Se Bandhi Ye Dori Ram Milaayi Jodi underwent tests at a hospital after she complained of acute stomachache. The doctors diagnosed her of kidney stone. But soon the male lead of the show, Nishant Malkani too had to visit the doctor, as he had high temperature and a severe pain in the throat. He took a day off from work and got his blood tests done. Now, he is waiting for his medical reports and diagnosis.

Surprise for Geeta

Geeta Kapur On Lux DID Doubles, we had Geeta Kapur with her jaw wide open, completely caught off-guard by one surprise after another. To begin with, Mithun Da sneaked her mother on to the sets of the show in a bid to delight her. As if that was not enough, Geeta's Ma had a surprise in store for her too! When senior Kapur went up on stage and said "This one's for you, darling!" Geeta had no idea of what was coming her way. The ace choreographer was left spellbound to see some of her most beloved contestants from the previous two seasons of DID-Dharmesh, Siddhesh, Kishore, Binny and Amrita- who performed an act for her on the Holi special episode. Geeta could not have asked for better gifts than reuniting with her kids after a long hiatus. Geeta was misty eyed from the moment she recognised Dharmesh, who was wearing a mask, by his trademark style of dancing.

Rubina’s special gift to Avinash

Everyday seems to be the Valentine's Day for some! Recently, one heard that Rubina Dilaik aka Radhika of Zee TV's Chhoti Bahu, gifted her real and reel life dream man

We spoke to an excited Rubina who told us, "Yes, I have gifted Avinash a Shih Tzu pup. Both of us love dogs and wanted to have one for a long time. And now, we finally have the cutest one. Even Avinash was surprised but he loved the little fella."

It seems that these two lovers are still celebrating Valentine's Day. Avinash too confirmed, "Yes, Rubina gifted me a sweet pup and we have named him Romeo. When you are in love, you just don't celebrate one day as the day of love. For us, everyday is for celebrating love. Romeo has brought a lot of happiness into our lives and taking care of him is like looking after a child. Playing with him is a great stress buster and we can't wait to return home from the sets to meet our cute Romeo."

Now with two Romeos around Rubina, she has a tough time dividing her attention between them!

New timings for Lapataganj, FIR

SAB TV has decided to air Lapataganj and F.I.R. from Monday to Friday, instead of Monday to Thursday from April 1. SAB TV recently extended two of its hit shows, Sajan Re Jhoot Mat Bolo and Mrs Tendulkar to a five-day telecast, in response to their good TRPs. Because the ploy worked and the audiences loved more of their favourite shows, now the channel is adapting the same strategy for two other hit shows Lapataganj and F.I.R. from Monday. Enjoy.

Akshay's game plan

Akshay Kumar Akshay Kumar's diary is packed for another two years even though he has not had a genuine hit in a while. We tell you why.

A source tells us, "When a producer goes to Akshay, the star takes about Rs 8 crores on the table. He also tells the producer that he will get him any director like Priyadarshan or Sajid Khan and actresses like Katrina Kaif or Deepika Padukone. The next day, the film is sold to a corporate production house such as UTV or Ashtavinayak or Reliance. Till the first reel is made, the expense is borne by the producer but after that, all costs are borne by the corporate house. For instance, Tees Maar Khan was made on a maximum budget of INR 35 crore barring production. That cost was borne by Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder and Akshay Kumar. Till they made the first reel, the expense was theirs but after that, everything was borne by UTV. Farah and Shirish made 12 crore on the table, before the movie even released."
Akshay's forthcoming movies:
* Desi Boyz
* Namastey London sequel
* Housefull 2
* Thank You
* Joker 3 D
* Sequel to Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai

He continues, "Akshay is only concerned with making money and getting richer every year. He does not care whether his movies work or not or whether they prove anything or not. All his movies are of the same mindless goofy type. He is very wise and has invested in property in Mumbai, other cities in India, and in Canada. He can own a floor in every building made by a particular builder in India. He has invested in a hotel in Canada. He had permanent citizenship of that country so he can move anytime he wants. These days, actors ask for territories so he always asks for Canada because he is guaranteed an audience over there."

Home trends this season

Interior design is an ever-changing spectrum of ideas — every year there is an influx of new trends that reflect the current mood, subconscious thinking, and sometimes even the latest trends in fashion and music.

Let's look at some 'in things' of 2011.

Warm colours

Colours for this year are all earth tones with some warm colours of spices like cinnamon and nutmeg thrown in. Elements of caramel, mocha and bitter chocolate also provide the perfect canvas for one to play with. Nude colours are no longer boring but fluid and cohesive, and you can add accent colors like plum, wine, coral and mandarin orange to add that zing you need for spring.

Textured walls

Wood paneling is going through a revival of sorts. Walls are showing a play of textures - rough with glossy, smooth with grainy. A play of stone can be an interesting touch, but the colour palette should remain tone on tone, and no stark contrasts should be used.

The 'heirloom look'

One major design trend is 'going back to your roots.' Your home should be reflective of your ancestral and cultural heritage with a touch of local craftsmanship. This year, design is being influenced by tribal forms from Egypt, India, Morocco. Old pieces take pride of place, and even if they are a little tattered or worn-out, they impart a certain chic element to your interior.

You can put this look together with a white marble floor, white walls and contemporary furniture in nude colors. Add a major conversation piece in the form of an ornate baroque-looking console or a heavily embellished crystal and brocade sideboard. Accents in the room can be hand embroidered vintage cushions, an heirloom throw or a faded antique carpet.

These are a few general pointers for this season. We must remember that a good interior is one in which you can relax and that reflects your personality.

Putt your problems out Par Excellence

Par Excellence Jesse Grewal

To improve your game start by objectively listing the problems you face frequently. Before you make any changes you must understand the ball flight and analyse it.

There are five basic problems and your mistakes could be in any one or more of them. When you have multiple problems, you need to make a priority list and tackle them one at a time.

n Clubface at impact-Could be open resulting in a slice or shut resulting in a hook.

n Path from outside to in (pull) or excessively from inside to outside (Push)-The correct path is inside to square to inside.

n Topping or doffing (chunking)- not catching the ball at the bottom of the arc.

n Adding loft or de-lofting- This would affect the trajectory of the ball and hence distance.

n Hitting off centre-toe or heel.

I feel that the problems of clubface and of contact are the most important ones and they should be on the top of your priority list.

The biggest single problem in this game seems to be the slice. Al least 75 per cent of golfers all over the world fear a slice.

A slice happens when the clubface is open to the path of the club. If your path is towards the target with the clubface open, the ball will start towards the target and then start moving to the right (in case of right handed players). If your path is from out to in then the ball will start towards the left (pull) and if the clubface is open, then it'll curve to the right. This shot could end up at the target. A lot of players in this category feel they have no problems with their short irons but have a big slice with the driver and long irons. The shorter lofted clubs do not slice as much as the backspin generated by loft neutralises the sidespin created by the open face. With the Driver there is less backspin so the sidespin has a big effect.

To identify your problem check your divots in relation to your alignment. This is important as many players with the pull start standing shut or right of the target. If the divots are pointing left and are deep then you are swinging from out to in and will have a Pull-slice.

If the divots are straight then you have only a clubface issue (slice).

There could be another category of players with the ball starting right and going further right. If the divots point right then the path is too much from the inside with the clubface open (push-slice).

Once you have deduced the type of slice, we begin the correction process in the next week's column.

When did you last have yours?
Mona

Two times a week, I drive away from my adoring husband, three little bright and loving faces, and a messy house. I leave my neighborhood and suddenly, I'm not a wife, a mother, a housekeeper, author, business owner, assistant, daughter, sister or employee … I'm just Roz. I'm just me and for four hours I can go wherever I want to and do whatever I want to," writes Rosalind Mays, an author, part owner of a secretarial support service, stay-at-home mother of three children (aged 6, 4 and 2) and an Internet researcher. Juggling between so much, Rosalind's secret to success is 'me time'.

When did you last have some time to yourself? Dual shifts - managing a career and a home isn't an easy task. Today when gender roles are getting blurred, women are as much part of the workforce while men share responsibility at the home front; most of us are constantly juggling between a million roles. Coupled with pulls and pressures of modern life, one is always racing against time.

To get off the autopilot mode, as one goes around the routine mechanically, a date with oneself is one sure way to restore balance in life.

"Today, when we play numerous roles, one needs to make a conscious effort to take out time for one's own self," says Jyoti Seth, city-based sociologist.

Even talking about it helps, she points out. "When we complain that we don't have time for ourselves, that's the moment to realise and work consciously to create some 'me time'," says Dr Jyoti. And it's not just a date a week that she recommends. "Spending some time everyday, doing what you like can lift up spirits. If you love flowers, taking 10 minutes to arrange them around the house or cooking what you feel like eating, not regular meals, can do the trick," she adds. "Once one identifies what one wants to do and takes out half-an-hour for it, true happiness can be achieved," she adds.

"Leading life in the fast track, many who come for counseling, tell me - 'This is not what I was like'," says Seema Aggarwal, psychologist with JP Hospital, Zirakpur. "Even when weighed down with responsibilities of work, home, parenthood and aging parents, one must make sure to have some 'me time'," she suggests. Women who work tirelessly for the family feel guilty if they indulge themselves. "No need to feel guilty. Rather 'me time' will promote your psychological as well as social well-being," says Seema.

So, when are you going on a date with yourself?

Stress buster
Renee Singh
Beat 'examophobia'

The most talked about word today is 'stress'. A few years ago stress and depression were pretty alien concepts for school kids but now they seem to be an essential part of their lives. Exams can be most challenging for both children and parents. But there are ways to beat stress.

Look for signs of exam stress

Children suffering from exam stress are irritable, can't sleep well, have less interest in food, worry endlessly and look depressed. A lot of negativity comes in due to stress.

Headaches and stomachaches can also be stress related.

Having somebody to talk to always helps, whether it's a parent, tutor or a study friend.

Combat stress

As a parent you can help your child to beat stress he/she is facing due to exams.

Balanced meal

Diet is very important. It makes you feel better during exam times. Too many sugary things like cola, sweets and chocolates, and fast food like burgers and chips make children hyperactive. Keep them out of bounds till exams are over.

Good sleep

Most children need 8-10 hours of sleep. Good sleep improves concentration and thinking.

Winding down time

Keep at least half an hour before sleep for TV viewing or surfing the net. Breaks are important to tackle monotony.

Be flexible

When your child is studying for exams do not be fussy over meal timings, tidy rooms etc. Let him be in his comfort zone for improved performance.

Help kids

Draw a study schedule for your child. Also, make the environment of your house more comfortable and congenial for your kid.

Comfort your kid

Tell him/her that nervousness and anxiety is normal. Put their nerves to positive use. Make them feel confident.

Encourage exercise

This helps boost energy levels, clears the mind and relieves stress. Walking, cycling, sports and dancing all help.

Don't put pressure

Do not keep telling the child time and again that he must study or "keep things in perspective".

Be re-assuring and positive.

Give them the comfort to realise that failing or not getting great marks is not the end of the world.

Time for treats

When exams are over, celebrate with a treat. This is an encouragement for next set of exams.

Ensure adequate breaks

Ensure that the child takes 10-15 minutes off every 2 to 3 hours from his books. This gives his brain a rest.

During exams do not allow your child to get pressurised. If you are with him/her emotionally, the child will definitely perform with flying colours.

More men go under the knife

Who said only women fret about their appearance and spend a mini-fortune on beauty treatments? Doctors say men too are increasingly resorting to cosmetic surgery to look and feel good.

"Typically, people think of celebrities and high-profile men going under the knife," said Stephen Baker, member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

"And while that may be true, the typical male cosmetic surgery patient that I see is an average guy who wants to look as good as he feels. Most of my patients are 'men's men', the kind of guy you might not think would have plastic surgery," he said.

"The growth in cosmetic surgical procedures for men may be a product of our ageing baby boomers who are now ready to have plastic surgery," ASPS president Phillip Haeck said.

"Minimally-invasive procedures such as Botox and soft tissue fillers work to a point. However, as you age and gravity takes over, surgical procedures that lift the skin are necessary in order to show significant improvement," he added. —IANS

Madhuri gets dearer

Madhuri Dixit Getting Madhuri Dixit to sign on the dotted line just got costlier. After the stupendous response to her presence on dance reality show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa, it now appears that the channel would have to considerably upgrade her already-impressive, if not astronomical, fee if the star is to appear as a judge on the next season as well.

Apparently, Madhuri's fee is larger than any reality-show judge is getting in Indian television industry. Says a co-star who has worked closely with Madhuri: "And why not? She brought so much to the table when she came on board. Jhalak Dikhla Jaa went to another level with Madhuri."

While Sony TV sources are tight-lipped about the re-negotiation, Madhuri is candid enough to admit that another season of Jhalak... is being worked out.

"We're under negotiation. Nothing has been finalised as yet. Let's see...I really enjoyed my first stint on the show. I am not discounting a second season," Madhuri said.

But for now, she is looking forward to joining her husband and sons in the US. "I don't know when I'll be back. This has been my longest stay in Mumbai away from my husband and kids. Though my sons joined me in Mumbai during Christmas, I still felt the distance. At the moment, I can't think of anything but going back to the people who matter the most to me," she said.

Madhuri also said she hasn't signed any film during this trip.

"I met directors and heard scripts. But nothing that would tear me away from my children," she said.

"I've to admit this was a very special visit to Mumbai. I felt extremely welcome. But right now, I can't say when I'm coming back," she said. — IANS
