Student shot dead by Manipur minister’s son

Imphal, March 21
A 21-year-old student was shot dead allegedly by the son of a Manipur minister, prompting a local committee to demand his immediate resignation over the incident. Irom Roger, a student in a Bangalore institute who had come to Manipur to celebrate Holi was allegedly shot dead by N Ajai Meitei (27), son of Manipur minister for irrigation, flood control and sports N Biren, last evening at Kwakeithel area in Imphal West district, the police said.

Official sources said that police suspected personal enmity to be the cause. Meitei chased Roger in a vehicle and allegedly shot him from a M-20 pistol, they said, adding that Meitei later surrendered to the police with his pistol.

A spokesman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the killing of 21-year old student, said the JAC has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh this morning asking him to sack N Biren Singh for proper investigation into the matter.

Senior opposition MLA O Joy (Manipur People's Party) today raised the issue in the state assembly during zero hour, demanding a proper investigation into the incident. Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh said in the Assembly that he would make a statement during the present assembly session. — PTI
