Facing criticism from the Opposition over choosing PJ Thomas as the Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC), Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today accepted his “responsibility over the issue”. “I accept my responsibility,” he said while responding to media queries here this evening before flying back to New Delhi. He was on a one-day visit to the state.

The CBI today pleaded in the Supreme Court for the revival of conspiracy charges against BJP leaders LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray and others in the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition case.

CBI files chargesheet against Justice Nirmal Yadav, 4 others
Chandigarh, March 4
Two-and-a-half years after the cash-at-judge’s-door scam rocked the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the CBI today filed a 25-page chargesheet against Justice Nirmal Yadav and four others accused in the case. The chargesheet was filed on the day when Justice Yadav was to demit office as a Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court.

Court accepts CBI closure report
New Delhi, March 4
Giving a legal burial, a Delhi court today allowed the CBI’s closure report seeking withdrawal of prosecution against elusive Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi in the two-decade-old Bofors payoffs case, saying the country cannot afford to spend hard-earned money on his extradition, which has already cost Rs 250 crore.

The CBI today carried out searches at the residence of suspended Prasar Bharti CEO BS Lalli after registering a case against him and others for alleged irregularities in the award of broadcasting rights of CWG reportedly resulting in a loss of Rs 135 crore to the exchequer.

Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister Arjun Singh died today. He was 81. Admitted to AIIMS some days ago with chest pain and neuro problems, Arjun Singh complained of breathing problem around 5.30 pm. He suffered a heart attack and breathed his last around 6.15 pm, sources said.

Terror strikes Pak mosque at Friday prayers; 10 killed
Peshawar, March 4
Ten worshippers, including a child, were killed and 30 others injured when a powerful bomb blast ripped through a mosque within a Sufi shrine at Nowshera in northwest Pakistan today. The explosion targeted the mosque inside Akhun Punjo Baba mazar (shrine) in Akbarpura area of Nowshera, about 15 km from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa capital Peshawar.

It’s ringing mobiles throughout the country
New Delhi, March 4
There is no stopping the growth of mobile telephony in the country. According to figures released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), over 18 million (1.8 crore) mobile subscribers were added to the country’s mobile network. TRAI added that the wireless user base grew 2.52 per cent to 771.18 million (77.12 crore) in January from 752.19 million (75. 21 crore) in the previous month.
