Mob torches Hansi police station; DSP injured

Hisar, February 14
A furious mob today torched a police station and a police post at Hansi town, 25 km from here, following the death of a resident of Sainipuira village in police custody.

The jeeps of the Deputy Superintendent of Police and the Station House Officer (SHO) and six mobikes parked at the police station were set ablaze. The mob also threw stones, injuring at least six policemen, including DSP Amrik Singh.

The trouble began when the body of Subhash, a resident of Sainipura, was found hanging from the ceiling of the police lockup this morning. He had been detained last night on charges of creating public disorder.

Hundreds of villagers reached the police station in tractor-trailers. The police maintained that Subhash had committed suicide. However, family members of the deceased alleged that he had been tortured to death.

Subhash’s son Monu said it was impossible for a person to hang himself to death from a height of barely 5 ft.

The angry mob pelted stones at the policemen and ransacked the station. The police fired rubber bullets and fired into the air to scare away the mob which retreated and gave vent to its ire by torching a police post on Sisaye Road. The SP, Hanif Qureshi, said further action would be initiated after receiving the post-mortem report.
